Abbreviation's

Being an older diver I am finding it very confusing trying to read some of the postings here, due to the trend of using Capital letters or abbreviations for words, or some form of shorthand that seems to come from a foreign language.
Could we get everyone who posts to to the forums to use the full form the first time with the abbrevition bracketted for use from then on within the single post.
I might just then be able to understand some of the posting and advise or help.
A good example is the posting on Precautionary Safety stops which baffled me totally by abbreviations used.

Other than bracketing, this usually happens; if an unfamiliar TLA (*grin*) turns up, check back a bit - it will often become clear...

Many abbreviations are now considered "mainstream", so don't get introduced bu the fuller version - take a look at http://www.diveinstruct.org.uk/terms3.html for a fairly complete list.

I think you have as much chance of that as getting a bunch of divers to talk about Buoyancy Compensators, Demand Vales, Surface Marker Buoys etcetera etcetera.

TLAs, ABBRVS and Netiquette in general are essential for safe and effective Internet communication.

Of course you have to learn these things progressively so may I suggest the following courses;
Open Forum Posting
Sport Texting
Usenet Leader
Advanced IRC
First Class Flamer (only for the committed).

Vic's link is a good place to start and for the complete reference have a look at

Gordon

100% behind you here.
On about half the postings I give up,after about the first line as it's just gobbldegook, and I've been using the forum for about 4years. Trouble is it's the people who use computers day in day out 24 hours a day that can deal with this stuff.
You do tend to see the same people using the forum and this is probably the reason why more don't join in. They just don't understand it.
Why not start up the 'Plain English Diving Society'
