I expect most wil reply "as long as you're teaching the technique effectively..." BTW what is the "new" way? I've always been more than comfortable with the 5 point method and so have 99% of trainees I've seen (this assumes we're talking about the same five points though... ;-) |

Hi David The BSAC ITS system does not teach that one way is correct over another but that the teaching of the skill should be 'effective' Where specific guidance is given, for example the revised procedure for AAS in the Diver Training Programme, then you need to take account of that but there is still scope for effective variation in the breakdown of the skill within that guidance. I've just qualified as an OWI, the method of completing the CBL we were directed to use was... 1. Grip 2. Inflate The other procedures previously taught are now deemed unecessary ie...(Grip) Mask, DV, Guage, (Inflate). The priority is to get the casualty to the surface as quickly (and as safely) as possible. By the way, for those advocates of the old method...don't shoot the messenger! This is how we were directed to complete the CBL, not my opinion on how is should be done! |

Re: C BL
I'm quite new to the instructing side of things, and this isn't the first time i've heard of changes to recomended techniques.
e.g. In an OOA situation the air donor does not present his octopus, but the recipient just takes it. e.g.2) rate of AV to CC changed from 1:6 to 2:15 What is the method for staying current with the recomended practices, is an instructors newsflash produced, or is it by word of mouth? Roger |

In theory by announcement in the club magazine, in practise word of mouth is probably the most effective way |

While we're on that topic, wasn't that supposed to be part of the function of the NDC Bulletin? The last edition of which was a "special" about the DTP in March 2002... |

Re: C BL
Roger
Those changes are quite old now, but they are in the Instructor manual for the DTP. Tip - Read the lesson in the manual, don't just use the wet Q cards. But word of mouth from courses is very important as well. However many clubs, instructors and DO's will not accept this - See O2 Admin thread. Steve Totally agree on that one. Dive Safe Paul |
