OWIC and PIE

Hi,
I've seen that in 2004 some areas are doing the PIE and OWIC in the same weekend. Does this mean it is possible to do the OWIC on the saturday, and then the PIE on the sunday, or is there a lot of preparation for the PIE that i would need to do after the OWIC?

You really do need to practise what you learn on the OWIC before taking the PIE, we encourage Assistant instructors of both levels to teach under the supervision of a NQI to get that practise

The PIE and OWIC have been run together this year, it is convenient to get the Course Instructors together for a weekend.

HQ do not let you book the PIE until the OWIC is completed.

Not with the burocracy that BSAC employs in not permitting the exam to be booked until the course is completed. You would be able to do it if you went to one of the schools that runs BSAC instructor exams rather than from the programme of events

Thats a very good point that some of my branches Assistant Instructors are very annoyed about.

They actually have a lot of trainer experience from their jobs and from teaching a lot while doing their DL qual.

Why one 'Rule' for Schools and another for the vast majority of 'The Club'?

My personal view is that if they are good enough and prepared to pay the money and put in the time why should they not get the chance to do this.

I personally looked at going down the School route, but could not afford or justify that kind of expence. A bit like the high cost of a BSAC Gas blender course at a BSAC School ?150! FFS, i can get that thrown in on a TDI course.

From my experience there's a very definite style of teaching that you need for the PIE. It?s this style that?s demonstrated on the OWIC and that needs practising before doing the PIE. Because of this experience beforehand may not get you through.

It?s a bit like a Driving test in that the way you drive on your test isn't necessarily the same way an experience driver would do things.

I don't know whether that?s the sort of thing I should be admitting...

Why one 'Rule' for Schools and another for the vast majority of 'The Club'?

It seems less that there is a rule prohibiting it, just that they wont take bookings for the exam until completion. The logic, iirc, is that someone may book both, fail to turn up to the 1st and be ineligable to take the second and using up a space which will now go empty. I think it is stupid myself

It isnt that much more expensive (depending on the school). I found the rate at Anglesey to be quite reasonable

ummm. other than the TDI Gas Blending courses, which TDI courses "throw in" a gas blending certificate? The nitrox courses cover it in brief but do not give out a blending qualification
