swanage pier charges
I parked on swanage pier last year and initially the attandeed charged me one price then asked if I was a diver (I was booked on a boat from the pier) I said yes and then the price went up by at least £1.00 , is that legal?

Re: swanage pier charges
The pier is run by the funds that are collected from promenaders, divers, fishermen ,boaters, etc.If you parked up on the hill it would cost you more and you would still have to pay the diving charge. It's good value when all considered.

The Swanage Pier Trust is supported by donations and charges to use the pier. The staff are volunteers. The restoration they have performed over the years is nothing short of remarkable. Considering the facilty it provides, the use of the pier by us divers is dirt cheap. Last time I looked there was a schedule of charges on a notice board adjacent to the gate. It's probably still there. As well as parking, boarding dive boats via the pier, many people dive under the pier. Divers tend to spend much longer on the pier than most holiday makers out for a stroll. This alone justifies the extra charge, which I happily pay whenever I use the pier. Lots of people do their first sea dive under Swanage Pier. ![]() So pay up, smile and be grateful. ![]()

Re: swanage pier charges
I agree with much of the above. I have paid my 20p or whatever for a stroll on the pier when not diving. But when I'm there diving, I tend to be there all day rather than 10 minutes or so.
Just don't give the volunteers who collect the money grief. They give their time for free for the good of the pier. anos PS - As a club, we spend a lot of time in Swanage. We stopped giving a prize for Diver of the year - now people get a plaque on Swanage pier.

Re: swanage pier charges
If its only a couple of quid to park all day on swanage pier its a real bargain.
I remember parking there & having to pay when I did my first open water dive under the pier at Easter in 1973. It was bloody freezing but left me with the diving bug which I still have. The dive shop was run by Bob Wright in those days & I also dived at his place in Peurto Del Carman in Lanzerote in 1977. Ah, Happy days, wheres the time gone. |

Re: swanage pier charges
Hi, rather than being charged extra for parking because you're a diver, you were charged an extra fee for DIVING , as has been said before, there are various charges for different activities i.e. parking, strolling, fishing, diving (off or under the pier, shore or boat - the latter may seem unfair but it is for the charity and is only a token fee.) You should have been given 2 separate tickets!
