Thank you to the many enquirers asking if we're ok after yesterdays earthquake/tidal wave. The wave hit Phuket on the Andaman (west) coast but I'm pleased to advise everyone that the Gulf of Thailand (east) coast remains unscathed.

Dave
So glad to hear that you are safe and well. On behalf of all of us at BSAC Travelclub - our thoughts, good wishes and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrific disaster. It is absolutely the stuff of nightmares. We - or someone dear to us could all have been there - at this time of year, at these specific locations. And many of us have friends who live and work in resorts around the Indian Ocean.
Love and good wishes

A short message from Phuket I have sent to my guests yesterday, to update everybody on the present conditions.
The tsunami that hit Phuket and other areas in South East Asia has of course serious impact on what is happening at the moment and the next couple of years, and some people have been badly hit, either in a human sense by loss of relatives and friends, or in a more material sense by loss of equipment, boats, beachchairs, etc. And at the moment everybody is doing whatever they can to minimise the damage as much as possible, and help the people that have been affected. But we also have to think about the future, and we have had a lot of emails and telephone calls about how this is going to affect their vacation, hence this email.
The areas that have been hit the worst are the direct coastal areas on Phuket island, like Patong Beach, Nay Yang beach and some other beaches. Also been hit badly have Khao Lak (from where quite some liveaboard boats to the Similans leave) and Phi Phi islands. Kata Beach has been damaged very locally, only the places directly on the beach have been damaged. Life is going on at the moment, it almost looks normal here. There are people walking by in bathing suits going to the beach, people are enquiring about diving courses, etc. The beach has been damaged, so have some of the hotels. The Club Med for example has been evacuated, and the ground floor of some other hotels has been seriously damaged. Also some of the hotels our guests have booked are affected, but not seriously, and service will continue.
At the moment the expectation is as follows: the daytrip boats start running again tomorrow; the liveaboards leaving from Khao Lak are not going for the next 3-4 days, it is unclear at the moment when they will be going. The liveaboard leaving from Chalong Bay will be going as scheduled. That means e.g. that the trip from 31 December will be going as planned. Also all later trips will be going.
Since we have not been out diving yet, we do not know yet how the tsunami has affected the diving conditions. Visibility will probably be good again in a couple of days, but how it affected the marine life? I personally think it will not be affected too much, but can't make any promises at the moment.
