Hi
As I am layed off with a septic wound and thinking of reading up on diving and not having too many books, I was amazed at the price and posage, "how much?" :(
Then I had this idea, what if BSAC HQ organised a rental system a bit like Amazone DVD´s ?
You hire a book say for the month, then return it for another !
Simple and another source of income for HQ
So what do the membership think ?
Add a you houghts to the poll (please) Ta

Borrow books?
Yes. I seem to remember the idea. My Father in law was County Librarian for Hampshire. No. Doesn't appeal.
My problem is that if I see a book I want it. Some of you have seen my house and the last estimate was that I had over 40 meters of bookshelf and well over a ton of books.
Then I discovered Amazon...
I don't borrow books.
If it's worth reading, I'll read it again.
And if it's a referance book, then if i've not got it to refer to...;)

P&P x 2 is about the cost of some of the books, I think it would be a ridiculously expensive way to go. I'd prefer to just buy it and have it - or for reference books buy a copy for the branch which can then be shared around as required.

Just had a quote for a copy of the NOAA dive manuel+P&P, approx 140 GBP plus the banks transfer fee of 35 europs.
Again Diving and Sub Aquatic Medicine – Carl Edmonds mega bucks !
Say 10 GBP rental for a month and another 10 GBP for P&P, I would be very happy with that!
Also HQ could probably get a grant from the EU for the initial outlay for the stock items.

Chris,
i have both books mentioned and yes they are expensive.
But i would not give them to anyone if they intend to leave my house with them.
These are great books which i intend to keep for life, and they could help when i get around to do the FCD.

Both of these titles are regularly updated, they have a shelf-life, hyperbaric medicine in particular is a dynamic subject and anything published over 5 years ago may be missing a lot (or wrong in some cases). So the borrow idea is not such a bad one.
Chris, try looking on ebay - the previous editions fetch much much less than the current ones, but are still worth a read. The previous NOAA can be found at about €35. The only problem is they don't come up often so you will be better and diving again by the time you spot one... Also they are usually in the US so postage is a couple of weeks.
Speedy recovery mate,

What he said,
If I want it/need it, cost is not an issue.
Dont forget that if you borrow one twice then you'll soon be somewhere near actual purchase price once you've done P&P etc.

Hang on a minute......
Aren't you a member of your local library? They will (they're duty bound) order a copy in for you from central library, it may take a few weeks, they may even have to buy it, but they will do it - so why does BSAC need to set up in competition..........

Have you looked at the secondhand books on Amazon.co.uk
I can see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diving-Subaquatic-Medicine-Carl-Edmonds/dp/034080629X
