Hi Buds - The lakes are getting warmer. Just 6 years ago the average temp in January (the coldest period) was 5c, now its 7 to 8c. For June it should be between 7 and 8c but its actually at 12c right now. Thats a big change.

If you have dived the lake district between Jan 2005 and now - would you please check your logs and kindly PM me with the following details: Date(s), Lake(s) Dived, the Site(s), depth reached, temperature details. If you have uploaded your DC data to PC - the end of dive temp would also be useful.

I'll be compiling this data into a spread sheet in order to create a more accurate, up-to-date charts for everyone on my Freshwaterdiver.com website which hopefully will be completed for Jan 2008.

Any format is fine as I'll need to sort out and arrange the data into some fancy spread sheets!
The results will be used on the Freshwaterdiver.com web site to update the current charts but also for the first time, we will be able to look at how much of an increase has occured in five years.

I need to enter a total of 16,000 readings plus some. Just entered the 100th reading today.
With your help, this could be the most detailed look at lake temperature differences yet undertaken.

What effect these higher temps may have on the aquatic ecology of the lakes - I hate to think.

Sincere thanks to all those who may wish to help. I'll be doing a write up in the Special Features page at Freshwaterdiver and listing the 'names', of all those who have helped.
Your sincerely - Webmaster Paul

Interesting - I wonder if this is the old chest nut of global warning or an increase due to lack of circulation from not having any boats moving on it now?

A bunch of nimby off-comers has forced a speed limit on Windermere, leading to a mass exodus of regular visitors - and their spending. (some say) :(

Wouldn't that cool the water Mike. Less powerful boat exhausts blowing their hot gasses through the water......... :D

do you also want places like capanwray? or just the lakes themselves?

27 and 28 januray it was 4-5 degrees at 17 meters and 4 in the container. overcast on the 27th and raining lightly on the 28th. cold weather all week.

yesterrday it was 6 degrees. sunshine, no cloud cover, warm ish all week.

Yesterday (10/2/08) Wastwater was 6 degrees at 35m. Misty until 11am when the sun cleared the hills and then sunny and warm on the surface for the rest of the day.

Thanks Mark
It was very atmospheric !
The main period I'm after right now is from Jan 2005 until December 2007.
Best format is:- Lake, site, depth reached, temp, and surface temp if poss.
:)

Thanks again for the help.

Capernwray data too please :)
I've just finished spending two days keying in all the data from one bud so that should give everyone some idea of how challenging this is.
Already starting to share some fascinating discoveries.
Like wastwater appears to be showing shes warmer deeper down at 50 ish  and positively freezing near the mouth of Lingmell beck. Great for the summer season when your looking to chill out a bit :D :D

Maybe they have been replaced by droves of buddies off loading their hot gasses through their wetsuits :D
We dont need dry suits up here anymore :D :D

Please help if you can - but stay  while doing so!

So far you have all sent in data on some 1500 dives that have now been logged but there is still insufficient data to create the lake temperature charts and announce warm and cold area anomalies  in those lakes and tarns.

If you know anyone that has dived the lake district between Jan 2005 and Dec 2007 I'd like them to send me their logged temp readings please, plus date and site dived, depth reached etc.
Please read the article below :)
