Diving in Cozumel

I am hoping to get over to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in late October this year, and fancy a few days' diving on Cozumel. Has any one dived there recently, who could recommend diving outfits and hotel package? I will be flying independently due to other commitments. Is it easy to book direct rather than through a package holiday? Also, I will need to rent most of my gear, if anyone has any tips on the quality of rentals I would appreciate it.
