Just got back from a holiday in Bali and had to post a message as I was pretty amazed by the diving there. I did a day trip to Nusa Penida with Bali International Dive Professionals (BIDP)- they are Bali and UK owned, and saw sunfish on two brilliant drift dives. I was so impressed with the diving I did a 5 day safari - Menjangan and Secret Bay, Tulamben, Gili Selang and another day at Nusa Penida.
Saw some great macro stuff - ghost pipefish, handfish etc. The water was warm and clear (makes a change!), the dive staff were friendly and really good at spotting the small stuff. The boat driver was pretty switched on - which was good given the currents around Penida - but best of all were the sunfish (mola mola). If you are heading out that way I would definately recommend a dive or six!

Darren,
Sounds great. Why don't you turn this into a longer report and send it to me at alison.boler@bsactravelclub.co.uk? That way I will put it on our Bali country page and it will become a permanent record and reference for divers visiting Travel Club and wondering about a diving holiday in Bali. The message board is great for quick q&a but trip reports soon get lost here.
If you send me the report (plus a few pix in jpg format if you can manage - preferably not underwater ones) then I'll send you a ?15 voucher for your trouble.
It needn't be a work of literature - just a couple of pages of facts for visitors: operators, costs, equipment, food, dives, temperatures;things of interest.

Hope to hear from you
Allie

Agreed Darren,

I'd love to hear a longer trip report as it's somewhere I've never been and want to put on my 'must dive before dead' list ;-)

Cheers in advance,
Bren.

Followed your advice and dived with BIDP during my trip to Bali. Did a day at Penida and saw two sunfish, a day at Gili Selang and an overnight at Tulamben - saw pygmy seahorses -fantastic diving and great dive crew! Thanks for the tip.

I absolutely agree with you: Bali is a super destination for diving. Especially if you like macro stuff, but also for the bigger things: manta, sharks, ...
1 comment: you mention you saw handfish? Don't you mean "frogfish"? Because I thought handfish only live in cold water (in New-Zealand). Frogfish resemble them a little bit.

Hey Bren
I agree Bali is a better dive spot than people expect. I just go back and must say I thought Nusa lembongan is the top place. Can't bne bothered to do a report but I went through Dive The World and their site has plenty of details: www.divetheworldindonesia.com

I agree about diving in Bali - its superb. I did a couple of dives at Manta Point off Nusa Penida and the Mantas were fantastic. I also saw numerous sunfish - apparently this year there have been heaps of them around
