View Full Version : Belize
The wife and I are thinking of going to Belize in May. Has anybody got any experience of this and have any recommendations? Specifically, I've heard a lot about Ambergris Cay and Caulker Cay - what is there to choose between them and are there any other areas we should be considering?
Thanks,
Iain

Have a look at:
www.belize.com
www.belize.net
When I was last there Ambergris Caye had about 40 dive operators.
Not been to Caye Caulker
If you can afford it the diving around Terniff Atoll is good.
If you find your selves in Belize City dress down or you will be a target for a hold-up.

Have a look at the link below which will take you to the Rodale Scuba Diving Magazine tripfinder site for Belize. There are a lot of articles there on different aspects of the island but also they have a bulletin board where you can read the opinions of the mostly American divers who frequent the site. I find that this site is very good for getting a view on the Caribbean because it is for the Americans, like the Red Sea is for us eg their backgarden. Obviously, having read what they say, you then need to decide if it applies to a Brit or not!
Hope it helps - have a great time.

Hey Iain,
Try this:
<a href="http://www.divebelize.com" >http://www.divebelize.com</a>
Right on Ambergris Cay and within easy striking distance of Lighthouse Reef and the Blue Hole. It's owned and run by two of my mates (Gaz Cooper and Mark Wilson - both Brits), both have been diving the area since the early 80s and set up their own outfit. Gaz is currently in-country, but you can contact Mark in the UK for advice info etc on his moby:
TEL: 07941 - 863218
or his email address is
<a href="mailto:playablancadivers@yahoo.com">playablancadivers@yahoo.com</a>
Good luck, enjoy and dive safe!
Cheers,
Bren.

Placencia is also a place where they have access to the reef and a few other site which are a long boat ride from Ambergris Caye or Caye Cauker.

Hi
I stayed at Lighthouse Reef - saves a lot of boat time getting to Blue Hole and Half Moon etc.
Great place to stay, light plane transfer to the island - see <a href="http://www.gordonmackie.com/belize.htm" >http://www.gordonmackie.com/belize.htm</a> for some photos
their own website is

We did a liveaboard on the Nekton Pilot around 4 years back.
Diving was good but no better than many other places.
Highlight of the trip though was a few days we spent in Placencia.
The reef diving down there was pretty poor but we were there when the whalesharks visited (7 around us at one time) - see the video accessed from the attached link - I'm the one with the small shiny camera housing ;-).
The sharks come in to match the spawning of the snapper so you need to time it right - we only spent 2 days diving there so I guess we were just lucky.
