Scott,
I spent some time there back in '99 and contacted the local BSAC club on the island (South China Dive Club) they meet at the boat club in Aberdeen (south part of the island). They're a friendly lot and were very welcoming to me as a visitor, even loaning/renting some equipment. You can check out their website at http://www.scdc.org.hk Alternatively there's a club in Kowloon, but I don't know any details for them.

The diving there is similar to diving in this country, but warmer and of course different marine life etc. Viz can be good or bad, again similar to UK. WAter temperature when I was there (July/August) was 28-30 degrees, so I managed quite well with swimming trunks and a T-shirt. You may consider a wetsuit though as depths below 15m can reduce noticeably in temperature.

Sai Kung is the area for diving. You can post here for more HK diving information:

Scott,

The Hong Kong Underwater Club would be a good place to start your search - www.hkuc.org.hk

We have been diving in Hong Kong for 50 years and are celebrating our golden anniversary this year. We have been a special branch of the BSAC since the mid 70's.

We dive about twice a month - usually a day trip out with two dives, sometimes we stretch to a camping weekend and we also hold regular social events to provide an escape from the daily grind.

Just last Sunday we were out and saw schooling sweetlips and grouper (not all the fish have ended up in the seafood restaurants in Hong Kong). The water is warmer than the UK (16 in winter to 24 in summer), however the vis isn't much better (varying from a typical 5m to a max of about 15-20m if you're lucky). Most of us dive in 5mm full suits and hoods in the winter and 3mm suits/shorties in the summer (however a few resort to their drysuits for extended times in the depths of winter)

Drop me a line when you're in town. We can arrange all kit for you if you are just passing through and would like to join us for a day.

Cheers,
Tristan Green
