Does anyone understand when the different sizes are used? Is it an imperial/american v.s metric thing or do the different companies just pick what they fancy?

I have an Apeks console and a US divers 1st stage and they don't match. Can I buy an adaptor, can I get the hose changed do I give up and replace the console?

Any thoughts anyone has would be appreciated.

OK, further developments:

There is a company called Portland Oceaneering which, it seems, can only be found on google when you put in a very specific search (or know their name anyway) they seem to have a much greater variety of gear than the usual sites, including a 1/2" to 3/8" adaptor :)

This would seem to be what I need since the HP hoses are sold in those 2 sizes.

Would still like some explaination of why we (well me anyway) find ourselves in this situation.

Thanks

Sused it. I had an adaptor on my old contents gauge anyway, infact my wife's does as well. Do they all? Does this make sense?

DIN is a standards organisation, like BS or ISO. It is not a thread size in itself.

As to port sizes, I hadn't realised that HP ports came in 2 sizes. I know LP can, Apeks have in the past used both on some 1st stages.

Another good company for adaptors etc. is Sub Aqua Products.

I have an old reg where the hp port is the same size as the lp port (someone must have been on drugs when designing that)

The hp hose does not even have a restrictor built in, it is an extra adapter that screws onto the hose.

British engineering for you ?

Based on hazy memory

posiden regs used to use non standard ports, everything else I've come across uses standard ports US divers should do too unless its really old

'standard' port sizes as follow
LP: 3/8 unf & 1/2 unf (apeks primary reg port)
HP 7/16 unf

DIN: 5/8 BSP

The older regulators ( 1970s & 1980s ) had the LP & HP ports the same size and this presented a problem when
by mistake divers connected the LP ( direct feed ) hose or the Intermediate pressure hose to the HP port - bang ! The modern regulators now have a bigger HP port so this can't happen .

DIN means Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V. (DIN; in English, the German Institute for Standardization) is the German national organization for standardization and is that country's ISO member body.

DIN and mini-DIN connectors, are several examples of older DIN standards that are today used around the world. However, there are currently around thirty thousand DIN Standards, covering almost all fields of technology. ( One of the earliest, and surely the most well-known, is DIN 476, the standard that introduced the A4, etc. paper sizes in 1922. This was later adopted as international standard ISO 216 in 1975 ) .

In diving , with the higher working pressures of air / gas cylinders the A Clamp system is being replaced by the Screw
in system of attaching the regulators to the cylinder valve and this system 9 to my knowledge ) is to DIN Standard .

I reckon British sizes were much more interesting though. Things like 'Double Elephant' which was not double the size of 'Elephant'. AO is just so boring. :)

Thanks for your replys guys. I do have a very old reg. It is x-navy and all the ports are the same size. I had it serviced a few years back (had a few years off diving due to sprogs) and the old contents guage which was Siebe Gorman was removed. The servicer said they thought it was off a compressor or something and didn't like it but it fitted without an adaptor.

New triple console bought through Ebay was fine in the pool last night btw.
