Hello all,
I am looking to buy a Mares regulator, but I am unsure which one to go with. I have one of two options, these are the Mares Abyss, and the Mares Proton 32 Metal.
I was wondering what the opinions of the board are, preferably from people who have tried the regulator sets.
My diving style will be UK costal year round. With some foreign warm water diving maybe once a year, on air.
I was looking for thoughts and opinions, both positive and negative about the regs
Thanks

I had the newer Abyss and it was a FANTASTIC. I gave it to my wife when I moved to a Halcyon wing as the guys I dive with dive Apexs so I switched over. I don't dislike my Apex regs but I think my wife got the best end of that deal. (even if she didn't get a FANTASTIC reg for free)
Unfortunately(well unfortunately for this discussion) I do mostly warm water diving these days so I can't really comment on the cold water aspect of the regs but when I was researching them the cold water reliability was why I chose the Abyss.

Thanks for the feed back. The guys I dive with mostly use apeks regs, so I will be the only person with a mares reg. However I have heard extremely good reports about the abyss from other divers, however the latest model is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. I much prefer the older Abyss reg, from an aesthetics point of view.
I would buy the Abyss. I've had both and I'm haveing trouble getting enough air through my Proton 32, especially on cold water dives.
i have abyss 1st and 2nd stage for technical kit, and abyss 1st with a proton second stage for single cylinder, and like both equally, i have dived in 5 deg celcius water with both, the abyss 1st and 2nd just has the edge, but the difference is hardly noticable. the balance is the same on the test rig or so the techno guys tell me. the proton is compact in size. i have dived both in the red sea and uk.
check out kent diving they are doing great deals on the abyss 1st and 2nd stage, think £239 plus p.p about a tenner, but no octopus etc.

I've got the proton metal and dived UK early Jan at 5 degrees with no probs (on the same dive when our DO and TO both had free-flows with their Apex regs!) - also dived warm waters (croatia and red sea) with these regs and never had any probs so far.....
About to buy a pony set up and looking to upgrade my primary DV to an Abyss (purely cos I heard so many good things!) and then put my proton metal onto the new pony........

I would go with the Abyss everytime I have have had mine in water temps of 1 degree been breathing like a rapist because of the cold and not once had an issue with it.
I used Posiedons for a while but have gone back to my Abyss

I also use Abyss and agree with everyone that its great reg for cold water.
Still would be interesting to hear from someone familiar with technical side of things what is the difference between Abyss and Proton Metal. Anyone ? :)
