Hi
I am looking to go Diving in the sound of mull in September. Can anyone tell me when the best time to dive ie. Neaps or Springs and also what dive centre can you recomend.
Thanks.
Harry
Hi Harry
Without any hestitation what so ever, I would recommend George Mair on Loyal Mediator / Gemini Storm.

George is a very professional, knowledgeable skipper who also is a Commerical Diver, so understands the needs, wants and desires of divers. He is a great cook - you never go hungry on board. He keeps his boats clean, and constantaly maintained.
I've dived off his boat I guess half a dozen times to Kilda, Skye, Summer Islands and the Sound of Mull. One of the groups I dive with often runs a "Social Weekend" with George. We get on board Friday afternoon. Then dive the Sound Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. Leave Monday afternoon, and back in work on Tuesday. It makes doing the Sound of Mull on a long weekend very doable from London.
One of the reasons I like diving with George is that he endeavours to go where the weather isn't, so that you are always able to get in the water.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy it. The Sound of Mull in September is a truly stunning place, the trees have normally turned by then, which makes for a beautiful sight. The banks appear aflame, as the trees are clothed in a range of gaudy reds, browns and oranges. Oh, and the diving's not bad either :)

Hi Harry,
Neaps for almost everything, although slack water is pretty short on several of the best wrecks at any state of the moon. There are several boats up there - have a look at lochaline charters if you'd like to book a boat for your whole club, or Puffin if you plan to go as an individual or just a buddy pair.
Cheers,
Ben
For the last few years a group of us have been using Lochaline Dive Centre and Lochaline Dive Charter, owned by different people but work well in tamdam.
Lochaline Dive Centre (http://www.lochalinedivecentre.co.uk/)
The Dive centre sleeps 24 and Alan has two boats the Bendan and Perigrine.
Lochaline Dive Charters (http://www.lochaline-boats.co.uk/)
The Centre is centrally located to get to all the main dives in the sound and if the weather is good you can get out of the sound.
If you want to be based in Tobermory then there is a boat called Silver Swift which we used a few years ago.
Silver Swift (http://www.silverswift.co.uk/)
I think both dive centres will pick you up from Oban, the only down side of Lochaline is the bl**dy long drive - pretty in good weather though :)

Hi,
The Sound of MUll is stunnng most times of the year.
If you're based in Oban, there's always Puffin Dive Centre, The have accomodation either out at their centre on in houses in the town. WE stayed with them last February for a few days diving and it was excellent.

we also had a great time with George on Loyal Mediator - he now has his Severn Class ex-RNLI lifeboat which was a couple of weeks of being ready when we went in August
Great diving, great food and stunning scenery
Wrecks, seals, whales, popoises and dolphins :)
Mind you he was shocked to hear what one of our crew thought 'tea-bagging' was
Hi all
many thanks for your suggestions, Roz i like your idea of the long weekend as i live in Oxford, and it does seem very doable
Cheers

To be honest, any time of year, don't even worry about neaps/springs. The only time you'll have a problem in the sound is with big NW winds, otherwise theres always alternatives.
I run a trip in the Sound every Feb for our club. With snow on the hills, clear water around 8 degrees it's fantastic.
Check this out.
