Hello,

Diving is great if you have a hearing loss in many ways - HOWEVER - I have nearly been decapitated by a rib which I didn't hear approaching from my rear while going up.......

any offers on a loud noise alert I could get as kit that flashes or something????????

thanks

maria

This is why most divers prefer to ascend on a DSMB (a marker buoy you inflate while still under the water and run up above you on a string) if there are power boats operating in the area. Certainly if I am coxing the RIB it is "back to the shot" or a DSMB and every diver has a DSMB please.

Hi Maria,

I've been lucky enough to teach a few deaf people now - and as a result my sign language as improved immensly - but one thing I do teach deaf/hearing impaired divers is to always dive with a buddy who can hear properly.

I would also ask the question why you did not use an DSMB/Shotline or ascend in a safe area? Lesson learnt perhaps!!!!

Hi Maria,

There is not much difference under water between people with a hearing disability/ deaf and not but near the surface it becomes more important. But as you mentioned yourself if would be good if the buddy who can hear properly. I do also think using a SMB while surfacing is the right procedure (no difference if you can hear perfectly or not [at all]). However, I should also say the skipper of the Rib should have been also more careful especially if s/he know that there are divers down. Another thing that might help is getting a pink hood so people would see you better at the surface.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Diving New Year.

Thank you for your replies. It was my buddy that grabbed me! We had just finished our safety stop on a line connected to the permanent marker buoy so came up only about a metre away from it which is why I wasn't using an SMB!

Bright hood is probably a good thing - I must investigate

Happy New Year
