Is there a publically accessed database anywhere that has a list of wrecks that have been given protected status? I am especially interested in one that is in Scotland.

Thanks for that but I just read my original post again and didn't make myself very clear.

By protected I meant a site of historical and archaeological interest that is being protected whilst it's future or possible recovery is being planned.

Thanks for that. I still can't find what I'm looking for. The Sunderland in Pembroke Dock (as filmed by the wreck muppets) is a protected site and there's an exclusion zone around it. I was told this by the museum in Pembroke Dock and by the guy who holds the licence. I'm just curious as to what kind of body enforces this. The licence he is referring to is probably the one that would be issued by the MOD to work on the recovery but I didn't know that those licences carried with them an exclusion zone.

Yes I was wondering about this one. Whilst aircraft wrecks are automatically protected under the PoMRA 1986, and their designation may be either a controlled site or a protected place, there doesn't seem to be a list of controlled sites which are aircraft.
The Sunderland in Pembroke dock will automatically be a protected place but that wouldn't stop divers visiting it or place an exclusion zone around it. This would require a controlled site to be invoked on it.
I thought it might be protected under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_designations_under_the_Protection_of_Wreck s_Act) as a historic wreck which would place an exclusion zone around it, but it's not on that list either.
Maybe it's a local byelaw - or even the Pembroke dock harbour master's ruling?

I think it's more the harbour masters ruling. I can't find any listings anywhere.

Taken from Channel 4 Wreck Detectives 2004 - Sunderland (http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/W/wreck_detectives/prog_sunderland.html) final paragrpah reads:

Since the Wreck Detectives exploration dives on the Sunderland, Milford Haven Port Authority has placed a 100-metre exclusion zone around the site. Fishing here is now prohibited and those wishing to dive it must apply for a license from the Port Authority

It seems this is similar to HMS Hood in Portland - a port authority ruling. The exclusion zone is marked on the admiralty navigation chart for Pembroke Dock. Not to be confused with the Hood of WW2 fame, which is a protected place designated under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986

The licencee of the Sunderland wreck wants to recover the aircraft so is applying for lots of grants including Lottery money so I wish him well. Not sure what he's going to get off the bottom because it looked a bit like a scrap heap to me.

The Sunderland flying boat has a restriction on diving enforced by Milford Haven Port Authority and Dyfed Powys police. Diving is carried out by The Sunderland Trust Dive Group, with the authority of the licensee and MHPA (via a notice to mariners) who occassionally take visiting divers down toi take a look.

It would probably be best to close this thread as the originator is no longer with us.
