Hi
Can anyone tell me what these words mean please
Hyperoxic ?
Normoxic ?
I've seen them in the Tri-mix course, but cant find them in any dictionary :confused:

Normally:
Hypoxic < 18% FO2
Hyperoxic > 21% F02
Normoxic = The rest

Hyperoxic : More oxygen than air
Normoxic: (roughly) as much oxygen as air
Hypoxic : Less oxygen than air.
To combat Narcosis breath less Nitrogen,
To combat Oxygen Toxicity breath less oxygen.
However breathing a helium mix with less than 16% O2 and you probably will just die breathing it on the surface. Hence we distinguish between helium mixes that have enough and not enough oxygen for all points of the dive.
If you need a hypoxic mix at the bottom of your dive you need another mix to breath on the first part of the descent.

FO2 = Fraction of O2 (Percentage of O2)
For example the FO2 of air is 21% (approx.)
Hypoxic < 18% FO2
Hyperoxic > 21% F02
And if anyone has difficultly remembering which is which for these two (as a few of my students have done in the past) think about a hyperactive child having too much energy.

Hypoxic = Not enough Oxygen to support life at 1 atmosphere of pressure
Normoxic = Enough Oxygen to support life at 1 atmosphere
Hyperoxic = More Oxygen than needed to support life at 1 atmosphere, and may have Respiratory Ox Tox on prolongued exposure.
