Hello,

Im new to this board. I wanted to ask a question about DCS. I got DCS in my arm from shoulder to hand back in 2003. I was in Egypt on a liveaboard chasing sharks. Really stupid but I dont need to be reminded. That night throught to the next day I was up taking oxygen. I thought this was the end of my diving! It certainly was the end of diving that week. I was feeling alot better by the time I was flying home.
I returned to diving some weeks later back home. So it was generally 1 dive a week. I could notice my shoulder over time just feeling slightly sore. It has generally been this way since the diving incident in the red sea.
I did a few liveaboard trips and there was no problem, always concious of the fact of what happened. Move on to 2006 and I am on another liveaboard. The second day on the night dive the "Dive master" lets their mask fall off while entering into the water. I realised this and as I was in the water beside her I looked in the water. Seeing the mask falling down slowly I quickly swam down to get it. It was on the seabed by the time I reached it (about 7/8 meters). After returning the mask, we all started our night dive.
After the dive I felt as how I felt the time I got dcs 3 years ago. It was mild, but it was there, more so in my hand and lower arm. The "dive master" refused to believe it was dcs, when this was mentioned. It did go, after not diving for 2 days.
So what I am asking here is: Is there treatment I could do NOW, that can cure this problem. The pain in the shoulder is only when I move it in a particular way. The top of my hand is a little irritating since the second incident. I stay fit and find this keeps my shoulder from hurting too much. Its ok in a resting position.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks
D

The Only advice that anyone can really give you is to see a Dr who knows about diving medicince.

Phoning the Navy Dr or your local chamber would be a good start.

Good luck.

Im not one for Med Advice, but you didnt say if that when you were on Holiday on the first Instant of DCI or even the secound that you sought Medical Advice, can i ask if this was the case and you did seek Advice/Medical Attenetion.

Also the Dive Master who didnt belive it was DCI, NEVER DIVE WITH HER AGAIN! as you know one of the symptons of DCI is self Denile, if you had it before and you knew the onset, why did she not listen to you? all the DO's that i know, if you suspect it and tell them you THINK you have DCI they would put you on O2 straight away and seek medical advice.

As i said im not one for Med Advice, but if i had had DCI and then thought i was getting the symptoms again if the DM/DO wouldnt listen to me i would get the O2 myself and get it on my grid!

speak to a diving doctor, but as i understand it they will sometimes recompress you to deal with the after effects of bends as well as to remove the bubble itself so there may possibly be treatments they may suggest...? Depends how long ago this years holiday was...?

i would contact DDRC 01752 209 999 (personally highly recommended, but they are in plymouth!), or London Diving Chamber 07940 353 816 http://londondivingchamber.co.uk/index.php or (possibly best of all if you're not based in london or plymouth) the RN duty doctor on 07831 151523 who can both give you advice and suggest where to go for treatment.

Where are you based? someone may be able to tell you the nearest chamber...
