I am looking for the above as I wish to take away a laptop on holiday that will enable me to download digital photos I have taken and also use for sending emails occasionally.
Would also like to use it as a back up for my home desktop but this is a secondary requirement.
Price range - under £500. I know, don't tell me, I am a real cheapskate!!:o

get on eBay and buy a cheap Apple iBook :)
Try a dell, i use them for work development and there fine, a laptop is a laptop just some are more powerful than others.
what you have described as what it is for is not very descriptive, and to get a laptop the same specs as a pc is allmost impossible.
let me guess music dvds bit of word processing?
have a look here (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs)
and just incase your browser does not like that:

but i would wait a few months as the new microsoft windows is very close to release date, looks nice but requires a lot more on the graphics, so laptop manufactuars will have tro beef up the specs a bit.

MUSIC???:p not for moi??:o Not on a PC.:p Word processing yes!!!!
But aren't manufacturers discounting laptops at the mo because of the Vista software release?? Can't see the benefits at my age of buying to last. ;) Cheap is all!!

the more memory or ram the better go for the £449 one, they are not computer game playing machines though, but would do well with office windows and general tasks. It is a shame that it does not appear to have wireless LAN, but can buy usb pen/flash drive) sticks for that.
if this is not out of your price range it would probably be better, the base model should do, but ultimately it is your choice.

you can get a lot more bang for you buck so to speak with a desktop pc
Its cheapest (& lighter on the luggage) to by several 1 gig memory cards for the camera & download it all to PC when you get home.

for dells special offers http://www.dell.co.uk/tv
He knows about dell, being a computer programmer, I was just letting him know which may be better for him.
I would never recommend a basic model laptop for any one unless they knew precisely their needs, you will be surprised how much of the features he will use like wireless LAN and the card scanner in the model i mentioned above but later on if he needs certain things which are not in the 6400 like dvd writer (it writes cds and reads dvd's as it is i am referring the the base model) it would not cost too much to upgrade that, but if he ends up needing wireless lan, that is a different kettle of fish if he does not want to plug in a cards constantly!

Thanks for that. I am not rushing into a buy. Might wait for an xmas or new year offer.:D
The one you recommend looks good, wireless LAN and all. I watched various businessmen operating their Laptops in airports while I was away recently.

Check also www.ebuyer.com . They have interesting Toshiba laptops for sale (around £350). if you are not very techy with your computer, then advice to use Dell website is quite good. Their Inspirion models are well known to function longer and technical support is good. Dell has harder case then Toshiba and u should take that into consideration as you need laptop for travelling. Sometimes is good to pay extra and get what u really need. Cheep options usually bring headache in long run.
On the other side, digital camera that I bought recently (Sealife DC500) moved me into underwater video recording and editing. Lucky, had powerfull laptop to retrive images and video files. Ironically, 1 Gb memory card was enough for one dive. In half hour of underwater video recording fills all 1 Gb. Thats how much air you usually have for dive. So, having several memory cards is must to, even that you will retrive everything in laptop! You never know with water, biggest enemy of electronics!

lets take a step back . 1)how many shots in what format. 2) do you require to edit 3).what other pc function do you require excel ect. 4) do you require to down load to dvd.
if we take raw shots we get 90 apx per GB
if hdd is 40GB thats 3000 shot give or take & they are all good ones via the edit THATS A LOT PICS

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I am still looking. Is this still the cheapest, bestest laptop to buy? :p
Off to the Red Sea next month and looking to test it out over the week.
