Does anyone have a tool for unlocking password protected word documents?

I have some old files that are password protected - they should be sales & marketing blurb, but they have been password protected & I want to check them before I commit the ultimate sin & delete them off our system!!!

If there just basic word docs you should be able to open as read only then cut and paste into a new word doc which you can save as non protected.

If they are password protected to read (as well as write).

Try changing the file extension to .txt and seeing if you can see useful content.

However if strong encryption was chosen when the password was set, the file will not be readable like this.

There is probably a tool out there that will crack the files, expecially if they are old.

If you're looking to overcome a "Password to open" problem then this little app might help.

http://www.rixler.com/download/wpasrec.zip

If you are looking to overcome a "Prevent changes" password then you will need to follow a different route.

David.

I've used Advanced Password Recovery (http://www.elcomsoft.com/aopr.html) in the past. 30-day free trial is available.

Further to my problem I have now discovered that the files are word 95 (which fits when tehy where created) the software I have used so far only goes back to word 97.

Continuing effort is going into this....

Have you looked at them in notepad? You might be able to see enough to make a call on whether to scrap them on continue the search

Advanced Password Recovery should give you Word 95 passwords almost instantly (weak encryption).
