View Full Version : Eye Surgery
Does anyone know any information regards what kind of laser surgery is better regards future diving. My wife is sports diver and has been for the initial consultation where her options are Lazek and Lazik where the 2 kinds differ in relation to either cutting the eye or 'melting' the eye front and then healing. Any advice on what kind is preferable for future diving and recoving times before restarting the sport.
Thanks
Alan

I had Lazek surgery on both eyes carried out by Optimax in Bristol.
The surgery was done on a Saturday in June, by the following Wednesday my vision was confirmed as fit for driving and after a further month was near 20/20. My prescription was previously -3.0 in each eye.
The specialist advised that I should not swim for one month. Now it is fine and I have no problems with clourine or salt water.
You do not feel any pain during the surgery, but there is very, very severe pain for 36 hours afterwards.

I had lazik and can not longer focus out of one eye, so makes reading deco schedules a bit tricky.
I think lazek is less risky with flap complications, but lazek is more risky with infection problems. Both are probably ok for diving after a month - if you can still see

Having had laser surgery 13 years ago, I recently had one eye corrected. I paid for Lasek which cost £795 rather than £395 but felt as it was my eyes we were talking about, less risk of complication, hazing, night glare etc, was well worth the extra.
No pain or discomfort at all during the surgery. Afterward discomfort rather than pain. I was told it was OK to dive about 2 montrhs after the surgery.
Very pleased with the result and have no hesitation recomending it after my own experience years ago and recently.
