Hi,
I was wondering if anybody can help me, i have recently bought a second hand Suunto Vyper computer and it still has all the previous owners dive history in the log and memory, can anybody tell me how to delete it all so that i can start afresh with my own dive data.
I have looked in the manual and it doesnt tell you how to do it
Many Thanks

Basically you can't. The computer will store the last 99 dives (might be 100), and then start to overwrite things. It is designed to work this way.
Keeping ALL the history is considered a good thing.

I've been wrestling with this myself, unfortunately the answer available on the Suunto website is not too encouraging.
( http://www.suunto.com/suunto/main/article_1column.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=1013419867 3939070&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474395903551&bmUID=1157973284102 )
Click on 'Help Desk button at the bottom of the page. The you can the enter a query. This was the response I got.
'The memory of a diving computer cannot unfortunately be reset as this is a circle memory. The diving computer will start automatically overwriting the oldest dives when the memory capacity is exceeded. The maximum depth in the history memory can be zeroed but this can be done only in the Dive Manager software.'

To add to this you can do a couple of things, both of which require dive manager and a cable. You can reset the absolute max depth of the computer and you can set the sample rate to be the highest possible setting (10 seconds I think) so that the memory is over written as fast as possible. Then just do lots of dives :D

When I brought my Vytec second hand I looked into this. You can't do it yourself but I believe that you can send it back to Suunto and they can do it.
You might want to give them a ring to check first.
In the end I didn't bother and just changed the sample rate as Pete sugested.
Dave.

And make them LONG ones - as far as I remember the Vyper/Cobra remember the last xxx hours of diving (100hrs?)

And...
I seem to recall that you're advised to do a battery change without taking excessive time?
Therefore, what would happen if you just took the battery out and left it out for (say) a day???
Would you lose the dive history?
Or, would you lose everything? - anybody want to risk trying this "for the sake of science" :p

It is about 24 hours at standard sampling rate which is 20 seconds if I remember correctly, so it would drop to 12.
You would still get the summary data which I think is 100 dives

Dunk it in a pond for 24 hours? Or a 3 metre length of drainpipe filled with water if it needs to be that deep to put it into dive mode.

Thanks for all the replies guys it is as i feared that i will just have to up my diving and persevere with the previous data until i catch up.
I have not yet got the dive manager software but will invest in that and take your advice and change the parameters to move things along quicker.
Whe you do get the Dive Manager software, it will download ALL the dives in the memory.
If you delete old dives, they will be reintroduced when you next download.
If you tell the software to IGNORE them, they will be removed from the log & NOT introduced each time you download the computer.
This will ensure that you are only logging your dives.

Dive Manager s/w is FREE! off the Suunto website
You can get a download cable from many sources - including eBay - much cheaper than the "official" pack

Thanks Nick,
But i havent got the data cable so need to get that and it normally comes with the software CD. I have seen them for about £28 for a com port and £45 for a USB connection unless anybody has found them cheaper.

You can build one yourself fairly easily, or buy one that someone else has built off ebay for a few quid

Not to be picky, but wouldnt this cause the computer to die.
What is the effect of doing this? Would it error out thinking no one can dive for a day none stop, or has someone tested it?

Computer has no understanding of what it is doing it is just a mathematical model. The model says record what is happening and also says it is aways safe to cut the pressure by 30% when no compartment is is supersaturated.
So apart from the battery useage issue (which at £2.50 for a battery is not an issue) I don't see how the computer could possibly get damaged by this.

i recall someone did this but on a pier, apparently they could see the tide come and out in the dive profile in the SDM.
to be honest, what difference does it make? its just a number. you can setup the SDM to ignore the previous dives and only display yours.

Hi Ian,
As everyone has said, to get rid of the previous data you need to get the time in on the computer, but as for your dive log's by using the Suunto Dive Manager Software you can get the details for your log correct by following this proceedure:
On the first download it will insert all recorded dives into the 'All Dives' folder.
You can then delete those records that are not yours leaving only your own logged dives.
You then select those dives from the 'Dive Computer' section that you do not want to be included in your log next time you download by right clicking them and selecting 'Ignore'.
Next time you download all you get are your logged dives:)
You can also correct times/dates etc within the dive manager log book file if you have set this on the computer wrongly, I did first time I used it:o
Next time you download it will show the original and corrected one, just set it to ignore the original one as already described and delete it from the dive log.
Hope this helps.

Hamish

I have the same problem with a used stinger which I now own! Suunto are top dive computers but I think they are missing a crucial part of the diving experience. £500 -£1000 is a lot to pay for something you cant personalise to your exact requirements! Having said that they are cracking dive watches.Anyone else know if suunto can remove previous data or not? I would go down that route if possible but then again this might be just the right excuse to get my instructors to take me diving every week mmmmmmm now there's a thought

That's what I'd try.
I have a small PC program that allows you to wipe the dive log history on the Vyper and Vytec Suunto dive computers. All you need is the usual download cable (Serial or USB) and a PC :)
dear all,
I am also looking for this "famous" small pc program that would allow me to empty the memory of a Vyper I just bought 2nd hand.
could anybody please provide a link?
merci!

Click on the 'Suunto Tools' link on this site: http://liquidimagephoto.com/
You'll need a data download cable to use it though.

I have a copy of DC eraser it deletes all stinger memory even up to factory settings and im sure it works on vytec and vypers there are 3 modes each for a different computer. If someone can tell me how to copy the program from my desktop onto a post il put it on here.:o

Try this it worked on my stinger sorry attachment hasnt loaded dont know why and dont know how to delete this post:o(
DC eraser from http://liquidimagephoto.com/ works fine on the Vyper, but make sure you get version 3.0.1.4 or better. The older versions didn't work that well.
