Why do you think it was a bad idea?

OK it is not going to take you far in your diving career but it is a start and when you want to move on (Nitrox and/or deco) then you can sell it to someone else in your position. My first computer is still in my branch but on it's third or fourth owner and continues to get passed down

One of the original black ones? No Nitrox, no stops or anything? Brilliant little computer IMHO, I got mine back in 1996 IIRC, it was my first dive computer. Still going strong, still in the dive kit, often gets borrowed. I now use an Aladin Pro Nitrox, but for air no-stop dives I'd be happy to use my old Aladin Sport anytime.

What don't you like about it James?

Worked well for years until routine nitrox blew it away.

I bought a second hand one in 1988 (when they were black and yellow).

For no deco diving they are all you will ever need. If from poor planning you popo into deco , they will tell you when you are safe to ascend.

For deco diving, they are fine if you only intend to do a few minutes. You can learn the approximate deco from experience. You can also plan dives to estimate the deco. If you intend doing more than a few minutes deco, I would probably recommend buying something more appropriate (back in the silly days people using them did use them for long deco, but there was nothing better around). You can get a feeling of the amount of deco you have to do from how long it takes to change from 'deco at 3m' to 'deco at 6m'. This (of course) depends on your depth, but if you dive similar sites, experience helps.

If you are doing deep stops, then it is very hard to use a non deco diving computer as your stops often increase in time on the ascent - rather than decreasing.

When I bought it I didn’t know what I was buying I was just starting to buy some kit. When I was offered it I snapped it up after looking at other computers on the web and the prices. To be honest I have not even tested it in a swimming pool with a snorkel and mask. After sitting down and reading to the manual I just didn’t know if i should have waited to spend what i have spent on the Aladin Sport on a new and different computer. :D :D

But as you've seen from the replies you've got yourself a nice little computer there, your only "mistake" as such may be the price, but then we've all made mistakes like that

I did the same as you when I bought the Sport as my first computer. But in fact I didn't need a full decompression computer until some time later. At best you could sell it on on ebay or someone else in the club as someone else has said; at best you will have a good back up computer when you upgrade (I still have mine, nearly 15 years on).

I don't know what sort of diving you do, but given that you are just starting to buy kit, i would hazard that you haven't done too much diving so the Sport will be fine for a while, and is excellent for multi-level/ reef diving. It's only when you start to do more square profiles that you might find limitations, and even then air consumption might be more of a limiting factor...

Hi James,

my wife uses a black aladin sports which she bought in 1994.
At the time it was state of the art.

The main things that have changed since then are the tracking of microbubbles which some computers can do now giving more security over a sequence of dives. The basic programme has not changed much. For no-deco dives it is fine. On a deco dive the lack of an total ascent time is a problem on more severe dives. For a dive just into deco not a problem, but if you get a 6m or deeper stop you would need a lot of experience to know what it means in minutes to the surface.

Generally as you begin to run out of no-deco time you should be ascending anyway. Remember all of these computers and tables are only a rough guide to the deco process, particulalry on repat dives, so be very conservative with them. Stay well away from the limits, start ascending early in the dive and do the ascent very slowly particularly the last bit.

Iain
