Why do most people wait to try diving while they are on holiday? do you think it is because the sport is not pushed enough here, is it simply temperatures. I dont think people are aware of the fantastic dive sites we have available to us on our shores.
Our feeling within our club is that when someone turns up for a try dive we are all very pleased that we have a potential new member, the more the merrier, but we dont seem to let the public know we are there. There are plenty of adverts on our local radio for PADI, I just wish we could let them know there is an alternative.

Might bang some posters up myself on the town hall.

Peopel dive overseas because there are pretty fish, warm water and good vis. But I totally agree that the UK has some of the finest diving in the world (as long as you like wrecks :))

Why don't folks want to queue up to join their local BSAC branch - well that's another topic altogether..... :D

If it were me I would advertise in the local dive shops and do my best to take all the pre-trained divers I could find - offer courses on things like O2 admin for anyone that wants as an introduction to the training your branch can offer. Make sure your would-be member can come as a guest on a couple of dives so they can see the diving you have to offer.

Try dives are great. Oh.. that was fun, but I think I'll do the PADI OW as I can't be arsed to tit about for 4 months snorkeling and so-on and I'm in Mallorca in six weeks.......

When they get back they will have forgotten about you...

One reason is because when people are on holiday they do holiday type of things. They also expect to spend lots of oney on holiday (however this is not many weeks in a year)

People also see this as an event rather than starting a past time

When on holiday i've done flying lessons, microlight flights, visited chateauxs, gone wine tasting etc, played golf All things that I would not normally do while at home

In the ballooning world we have it even worse, 10 of thousands of people do balloon flights every year and only a handfull want to be 'balloonists'. ie we have about 1500 members country wide yet.

Or in summary, lots of people want to do diving but do not want to be divers.
