Looks like the member number has to many digits, but an easy typo to make.

The link is to another forum that I suspect Tisserant has created. As you say its in an Off-topic area and it should die a natural death.

On a more general note, are members still required to include at least one real name in their Forum Name? It's just I'm seeing more aliases lately.

Aliases.
I have to say I find these a teensy bit tiresome. Yet another throwback from the good old U.S. of A. Why do we have to follow them in everything? Can't we lead any more?
I think they're a teeny bit childish, and remind me of the old CB Handles:

"Breaker Breaker good buddy, this is 'Sadgitwithnofriends' calling. Do you copy"?
"No"?
"OK then, I'll get my coat"... :D

I was under the impression that people had to have their real name in their profile but obviously not?

From an admin point of view, I think most of us got bored of the hassle and aggro of asking people to change their name. We'd definitely prefer a real name, and if people start stirring up trouble we'd insist, backed up with BSAC membership details. I think that's only happened twice, maybe three times since the big forums change.

Everything you see here is the work of volunteers and sometimes we just run out of steam.

Hmm Aliases and nicknames.

I've never had one (well not a polite one :) ), but I am well aware that we will have members who have spent many years in an envorinment where nicknames and tags are part and parcel of their environment. Armed forces for example.

We also have minors here, so it might be reasonable for them to use a tag as a layer of security. I'd rather see a tag than John Smith1 and John Smith2 or MattS and Matt S. I'm bound to mix them up.

I do find it funny when people use a tag and then start their first post with "Hello, my name is John..." :)

Well I'm ex RAF and for a bit, I had a nickname that I'd probably rather forget.
I couldn't use B*gw*lly on here really :D
But I see your point, (and also that this is wholly the work of volunteers too, Ben. I know what you mean only too well, from personal experience).

It's just that for years we had flaming and spamming on the forum and although that seems to be almost completely gone now (but still remaining an excellent and worthwhile forum to use). Most, if not all of the rudeness was perpetrated by people that hid behind a false name.

I just find that for the most part false names don't really reflect real life, but then I guess the forum doesn't have to.
And being in the armed forces definitely doesn't reflect real life!

I'm all in favour of aliases.

For example "Matt S" is hardly a unique identifier, and I can't see it causing probelms for Matt posting under his name, but having an unusual name I wish I'd used an alias when I first started forums, but it's too late to change now.

I thought yours was an alias... :D

Why do you wish you'd used an alias when you started using forums? Are your posts catching up with you or something?

Everyone seeing my name knows I'm a troublemaking old f*rt, but at least they know what they're getting I suppose. Especially with this avatar.

Everyone calls me Woz. If you call work and ask for "Woz" then you'll get put through. However aliases that aren't real nicknames can be thoroughly confusing- just go to any YD gig and see everyone introduce themselves as "hello I'm Ian. SpankyFrumpNumpty on YD". Gets very silly.

Seriously? It's an interesting thing to do with t'internet and forums.

People will judge you by your posts (which is fair enough). However, when I turn up on a random site, people will say "So you're Janos" and I think I'm pre-judged a lot.

For example, there was a time when I spent a fair bit over YD defending BSAC (by putting forward my experiences of my club to challenge the stereotypes that were being propogated). Around that time I was on a couple of dive sites and, after introducing myself I was further introduced as "Mr. BSAC." based on my YD posts.

I'm also well up on my theory, and I can also talk a 150m dive pretty convincingly. (Or internet dive it!) I used to worry that people would assume that I knew what I was doing on the deeper YD trips and so I used to introduce myself as Janos, and although I talk the talk a bit on the internet I don't necessarily walk the walk. So please don't assume I do!

I bet that when a Matt or an Andy introduces themselves they don't have the same problems.

Who? :D

I used my real name for the same reason, I didn't want to be mixed up with some knob spouting stupid opinions.

I can do that all on my own thankyou. :)

Yeah, I've been called "Mr BSAC" on more than one occasion, I didn't mind at all.
And I've also had "Oh You're THAT Andy Wade" ...which is far more disconcerting. :D

I think its very hurtfull to call you Bogwally Andy. My father-in-law was in the RAF and they were beastly to him too.
