I am considering doing an HSE diving course as resettlement leaving the military. Has anyone got any experience of these?
Where are the best centres to go?
What will the costs be?
Can any BSAC or PADI qualifications count towards the course (save me money)?
Are there any training locations in SW England?

This question comes up a lot on forums and the second post is always what do you want to do after the course as there aren't many jobs going. So I thought I'd post that as second post this time round :D
IIRC there are some exemptions but not enough to get excited about.
The course is about 3 grand.

£3,000 is only part 5 to do part 1 with all add ons will cost you about £15,000 or go abroad and do it for half of that.
Like what Chris said is there any jobs ??
Thanks

Jobs? I hadn't considered that. I just need to spend some money that the military are giving me when I leave ;) and it seemed more fun that doing carpentry. :D

The West Coast Commercial Diving Center in South Africa is very reasonable and it's warm. Either go to Fort William and freeze or go to SA. The diver training school is on the site where they do all the diving for alluvial diamond mining and if you trained there you will easily get a job there. It's nice there and a good crowd. Most of the instructors are ex SA Navy Commando Unit members and there is a lot more running around but being in the army you're probably used to that.

Hi there
I would also suggest you take a look at The Professional Dive Academy http://www.professionaldivingacademy.com/ who are based in the heartland of commercial diving in the UK - Aberdeen.
I know that they will be attending the Birmingham Dive Show in October, which is a month today, so it might be worth toddling along and having a chat with them.
It's worth remembering with training, especially something like this, that cheap is not necessarily the best. I do know they have some very good instructors there and their facilities are modern.
Jobs wise, it is down to that old story of "does your face fit, can you do the job without f*&$ing up, are you reliable and responsible". Once you get a reputation, (justified or not), it can stick with you and either open or shut doors........as with most of life really. Commercial diving is not glamourous, it is hard work, in pretty yucky conditions, but once in awhile you get a marvellous job in your lap. If you think along the lines of being an underwater labourer you won't be going far wrong, so having skills like welding is useful.
I hope this helps.
