Hello Everyone, I'm Ian and new to snorkelling. Could I be advised, although a bouancy vest can be used for snorkelling, could I use a low tech bcd and say a 3 or 5 litre tank just to operate the bcd?

thank you. Ian

I weight myself for neutral at about 10 meters and rely on the suit to supply the positive. In a warm water, in just my shorts, I am neutral at 10m so I don't have to worry. I wouldn't want to wear anything that bulked me up and definitely not a 3 or 5L tank. A snorkeling vest is normally something you blow up on the surface and not tank driven.

I quite like the look of the CO2 thing in Richard's post but I'll stick to dumpable weight for now.

hi ian,
i have been snorkelling for 2 years and find that the use of a weight belt with 4kgs of weight (which can be changed depends on the suit you are wearing) works fantastic. if i am wearing my shortie suit i will not use all 4 kgs would only use 2kgs etc etc. the belt has a quick release so if you need to you can dump it.
the belt and weights cost around £15.00 to £30.00.
Hope this is of help to you.
:)
