Hi Tisserant,
well your half way there just living in plymouth there are loads of wrecks on your doorstep.
not eveyone who likes the idea of scuba, actually enjoys the experience when they try. one of my best mates did the basics in the pool, got on fine, ducked on his first sea dive in shallow water ducked under and hated it! So find one of your local BSAC branches [check out which take on junior members you can join from 14 but each club is different], contact them arrange to go for a try dive.
if you like it book on a course.

Actually it is now 12 but as you say a lot of branchs have local rules that stipulate a higher age

Well if your in Plymouth I'm jelous as hell, our club is based North of Birmingham and we spend loads of weekends based out of Plymouth.
As a beginner, once you have joined a club and I'm sure Plymouth will have several, there are some cracking wreck dives available.
Have a look at these links to the dives:

They are bother beginner level dives / wrecks. And incidently I have to agree that wreck diving is far better than looking at fish!
Yes some clubs have it at 16 but some go to 14. I'm 15 and I'm in a club doing my training and Ive seen people who look 13 diving at capernwray. Its just some clubs are with the child safety act and follow it word for word so i had to wait 2 years to start my scuba diving when i did my first try dive at 12

Hi Jon
If you look around the age varies quite a bit. The Club that I belong have kept the age limit to 14 years. My son will be starting his training next month and he will be 15 in December. Plus we also have a Welfare Officer in place and all the Instructors have been CRB checked.
The same goes for the Try-Dives as well we have the 14 years for this as well. As a Club we now have 6 under 18 years. It works well in our club.
Other clubs in our area won't train anyone under the of 18 years.
Plus you also have PADI that train younger than that like 12 years. My daughters friend is doing it.

Hi
Also speak with the Sophie Rennie who is your Regional Coach, she can give you some good advice.
Welcome to diving!
Eugene.
