Hi all

A small question for the experienced members on the forum.

I have just completed my sports diver and my wife should be completing her ocean diver within the next month.

We are both required to have experienced dives in different dive conditions; five for me and four for her. One of the categories is "dive in protective clothing".

What constitutes " dive in protective clothing": dry suit and hood; 7mm semi, hood and boots?

Hope you can help

From the instructor manual "dive wearing either a wet suit or dry suit"

I think to expand on what Pete has said, the protective clothing should be suitable for the diving conditions being experienced.

i.e. If diving in temperatures below 10deg a dry suit is recomended, 10-20deg a suitable semi dry or very good wet suit is recomended and above 20deg a light wet suit or shorty.

Although for most diving above 20deg the suit is more for protection against abrassion/sun burn and a 5mm shorty will be sufficient.

It does rather beg the question of whether anyone has ever tried UK diving without either a wetsuit or a drysuit? And if so, what's the longest dive time and depth anyone will claim?:D

One hour at 30 metres in Stoney Cove in January 1978, no suit at all, completely naked. Just a smile and a calor gas cylinder on me back.
Mind you, we were hard then. I could have had both them baldies off Eastenders wiv one arm tied behind my back.

Dived under ice in South Wales for 48 minutes wearing only a 5.5mm sharkskin suit, detached hood and boots too. God it was cold.
We poured hot water down the back of our suit necks before going in. It worked too.
I also wore ladies tights in a failed attempt to reduce water flushing.
That didn't work, but the feel of those tights on my legs.... ooh, suit you sir! :D
