Has the diving chef finally been flipped ?
No, just been to yet another food hygene courses

Well it apeares that there is an increase in cod worm, so if your into cod or hake,,,,,,read on.

The cod worm has always existed but in the past the fish were gutted at sea but now, due to market forces, fish in many parts are sold whole weight either straight to the consumer or supermarket/fish monger.

Problem when the worm finds out that the fish is dead it burrows out of the stomach into the flesh and can be seen easly as a redish spiral mainly under the skin.
How to make safe,,,,,freeze for 24 hours,,, so you might as well buy it frozen in the first place :(

Bon apetit !:D

As a Marine Biologist I always knew that cod were carrion scavengers...but it was not until a holiday job in a well known UK supermarket that I realised what this meant in terms of "extra livestock" in your filet!

It was written into my job description that I had to go turn the cod on the fresh fish display because the worms burrowed up towards the light...every ten minutes!!!

So...every ten minutes since the fish was filleted a worm managed to burrow through it and leave behind whatever worms leave behind after eating through your dinner!

Enjoy!

I think we got some worms from a Pollock during the summer. I was lining for Mackarel on the way back from the Cadmus to the sub but got a couple of pollock too. One had a cloudy eye and did not look the most healthy fish in the world. The skipper reckoned it was O.K so it went in the bucket.

When we got home and filleted the mackeral and the 2 pollock I noticed worms (about 1 cm long) burrowing into the meat on both the pollock and the mackeral. We phoned the skipper and he had only heard of them on cod. It was a real shame to do this but we binned the lot (8 mackeral and 2 pollock).

Would 24 hours of freezing have cured the problem?

No:( ...it would have killed the worms though!:)

You want to eat frozen and defrosted worms?

Used to be the IT Manager for a fish processor

As a result, would never eat Cod - the worms are (nearly) always there. When you cook the Cod the worms appear like little grey anemonites (I think) near the neck of the fish

Mind you, was also put off Skate after hearing the stories about that

So, now its Haddock or (well) haddock really

Keep thinking about giving up eating fish on moral grounds (until someone sorts out a sustainable fishery).

I might just stop eating them now becasue I am grossed out!

Hi Iain,

For advice on sustainable fisheries, have a look at this web site from the Marine Conservation Society. The decision to eat some sorts of fish is a bit morally questionable, but that doesn't apply to everything.

cheers,

Ben

It could be as questionable to eat veg given how much deep sea fish is used in fertilizers or animal feeds with manure to veg.

Well this is the approved way of dealing with them, but I agree
I've always tried to remove them but what about cysts ?

But there is more of it due to not gutting at sea and selling fish whole giving the worms more time to migrate.

Suppose I could just move to Auz and go straight for the grubs and miss the middle fish !

You know the bubbles in that brown wine...the rotting excretory products of rotting fungus!
And the reason they stay there and don't pop...that's because of the extract of rotting seaweed that gets added to make the bubbles "sticky" so they don't pop!

(incidentally ...it is this "stickiness" that causes the brown bubbly wine to settle on on ones midriff)

(also incidentally...the reason brown bubbly wine makes you belch and fart is not because most folk drinking it are men...it is simply because the pesky rotting excretory products of the rotting fungus keep rotting and releasing gas...and it has to go somewhere!...it's not our fault ladies!)

John

Glass of water anyone?

This wil probably get me into trouble but what the heck, it's my birthday today.... :D

A possible conversation somewhere in the distant past.....

John: Hello, my name's John.

Helen: Hello John, My name's Helen.

John: May I buy you a drink?

Helen: That would be nice, yes please John.

John: OK, I'll get you a fermented excretory product of a rotting fungus with added seaweed extract to make it sticky and the rotting fungus will also give you wind, but don't be worried, it's good for the digestion!

Helen: OK John, that sounds nice.... (thinks.... "what a smooth talker!")

John: And if you like, later I'll take you out for some Chips with Battered Carrion eating scavenger that has worms burrowing around inside it!

Helen: Get your coat lad, you've pulled!

Up to 30% of adults contain parasitic nematode worms as a result of eating infected meat. Other possible things include tapeworm and liver fluke, not to mention BSE believed to cause new variant CJD.

Parasites and pathogens from meat are far more dangerous than those found in fish since the animals we eat are far closer to our own physiology than fish.

Meat is harder to digest than fish and begins to rot before it is finally passed.

Fish contain many nutrients that are beneficial, whearas meat contains growth hormones and pesticides that are dangerous.

People who eat lots of fish (like the Japanese) tend to live longer and be healthier than people who eat lots of meat.

Meat is consumed in western cultures in too great a quantity sometimes leading to heart disease and cancer. Furthermore the production of meat is often environmentaly damaging.

Fish is healthier than meat and fish tastes nice too....
