View Full Version : Tony Backhurst / British Airways weight allowances
OK thought I would start this thread
Whilst I think its great to go with a regular airline rather than a SleazyJet/RyanScare type outfit I am very worried about the weight restrictions given the charter guys seem a lot better at offering deals/dispensations for divers
TB is trumpteting this as a breakthrough wherease I think cost wise it could be a nightmare
Any thoughts people about getting TB as decent travel agent to rethink the weight policy ???
Where are you travelling to? if it is a destination where the piece base applies then you would be entitled to 2x32Kg pieces
also be aware that BA may be changing their luggage allowances for cabin baggage in the summer such that 1 piece of 18Kg will be permitted as hand baggage which may be of use
Dave
Marsa Alam I think
Anyway TB is changing to BA for all their Egyptian liveboards as far as i know

Dave: BA's new 18Kg hand luggage, is this at the expense of hold luggage?

Hi All
I'm new to this board and as yet not given an introduction so please excuse me, I will do very shortly.
As i was browsing, this thread caught my eye as I've just booked a week in Hurghada with TB and thought we would be flying with some fly by night outfit but horror it's BA. I rang them to find out exactly how much checked baggage is allowed 23Kg and the person would not budge on gaining any extra allowance this has and is causing me a problem. Two sets of kit about 27-28Kg and thats without clothes.
What can be done to help us holiday divers?
Ok I'm of to do a short intro cheers :)

On the weight based routes ( such as egypt ) there will be no change to hold baggage other , than I believe, that individual pieces may not exceed 23Kg ( vs current 32Kg ) and allowances may not be pooled between travellers

Check it again in a couple of months since the changes have not occurred yet but are , I believe, to be announced soon

the only thing I can think of is asking TB what the cost would be for boat only? ie You do your own flight
Pees me off also - especially given the routing = bloody expensive excess
I can probably get my weight down to the required amount but there are going to be some very annoyed divers with TB once this becomes more common knowledge; especially the rebreather bods
I re-rang BA to try again with someone else on the other line " no way 23kg or pay excess " well i can see a few customers finding there own flights in the future and just paying boat costs. Ho Hum

Conversely they may well gain other customers since they are using a decent airline. If I was going to Egypt ( as I did last week) I would go BA anyway, I wouldn't touch a charter flight or be prepared to fly MS.

Where is the flight from?
I flew BA to Cyprus in March from heathrow and here is how I got away with a lot more than my 23KG.
If TB sends you an electronic ticket then you can actually check in from a machine and then take your bag to the desk.
We all booked in together to ensure we selected our prefered seats. We then went one at a time to check the bags in and only took a small piece of hand luggage to check in.
My rucksack with regs, computers cameras etc was left with a mate, this weighed about 18kgs on its own. mate then did the same.
Security are not interested as you get checked, Net result I put 25KG in the hols and had another 20 of hand baggage. Buddy had even more, we were charged not a penny!!
May work for you too.
Flight from Gatwick to Hurghada, cheers for the tips Alan will have to co-ordinate with misses and have a plan pinned down.

Don't rely on this from this summer with the new CAA regulations that seem to be being introduced
Dave
Just recieved this from the horses mouth, so to speak.
"Thanks for your email - When we buy in our seats from BA we negotiate
an extra baggage allowance for our customers- this is done via our
contractor who buys the seats. We buy our seats in bulk and when you
check in staff are aware there is an extra baggage allowance.
While BA allow 23+6Kg as standard we have arranged an allowance for
our diving guests of 25Kg + 6Kg free allowance i.e. 31Kg.
Excess with BA is charged at £12.94 per Kg
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me"
On my last trip my hold luggage was 40Kg (dive RB)
On Brittania I had 25Kg + 15Kg Water Sports allowance that to Marsa Alam cost £60 (£30 to Sharm)
On BA's rates my excess would be £194.10 an extra £134.10
Thanks TB...
exactly - enough to drive RB boys to a different boat I should imagine
