Adults and youngsters can undertake the Basic Snorkel and Snorkel Diver Courses at a BSAC Branch or BSAC Approved Centre (without becoming a BSAC member). Further qualifications would require membership of the BSAC.

Same as ocean diver me thinks? :)

To do any qualification, if it takes more than 7 visits to a Branch, then they need to be a member for insurance purposes. Otherwise the Instructors are deemed to be working commercially and the insurance does not cover them.

If they are not a member they cannot, any longer, get a green QRB, to record their progress.

So...I decided to find out what Snorkelling membership costs - and could not find it anytwhere readily accessible on the websites:(

As it happens I must confess to not having read all of my June DIVE magazine and had that to hand (how sad am I?)

It only costs £14 to become a snorkelling member (no voting rights/magazine etc)...so if James were thinking of setting up a branch in France to train people to snorkel - he'd only have to add £14 to his branch joining fee to cover his students with insurance....and get them a green QRB!

I assume (and I know that's a dangerous thing to do) that no-one would have a problem with James charging folk an annual branch/BSAC fee - even if they were only staying with him for their fortnight's annual holiday?

The following leads you to the cost of snorkelling membership on the BSAC Snorkelling site. http://www.bsacsnorkelling.co.uk/bsac/about.htm

Hope this helps John, you can now surf the web instead of reading Dive.
