I have just discovered that BSAC needs a new SDC!
I have just returned from giving a Scuba diving presentation to a room full of 4 and 5 years olds!
My son's nursery teacher had heard that I do diving and since they had just returned from a trip to the local aquarium they thought a presentation from a diver would be good. They asked me to do the talk in full dive kit!!!

The BSAC Club Instructor exam and practical was easy compared to standing in full dive kit and having questions from kids!!!

Was great fun today and my stories of sharks, wrecks and treasure made some very wide eyes.

Maybe some of them will become BSAC members in the future and will remember the idiot sweating in full dive kit at their nursery.

BSAC can I have some training in this!! :D

Fantastic. Good for you. I've been asked to do a presentation for my sons badger colony, but had not thought about doing it in full kit!!

Have some green :D

I really do hope you mean Beaver Colony and not Badger colony?

Hi John

We are hopefully going to do something with my son's explorer scouts
either a try - dive because these are 14 + or snorkelling. Should be
good fun.:)

We do lots of Try-dives with Explorer Scouts (14-18) & Scout Network (18-25) and Snorkling for Cubs & Scouts.

But then again we are a scouting based dive club!!

(and 6 would imply that a "try dive" might count...OD certainly would!)

See 11 (and convert to BSAC Diver Cox'n) - though that would also fulfill

Option b (1)

I would think that OD would also fit here...or any form of progression from what qualified for a Scout badge.
Strange that there's no snorkelling/diving option....must chase that with Gilwell!)

And, of course a new hobby/activity (in which progress can be measured/demonstrated) would count towards "challenge" badges and towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards

HTH

PS
Strangeley enough...could not find a "badgers" section:p

I thought perhaps that that was the section for grumpy retired leaders :)

Scuba Diving/Snorkeling would come under Physical Receration for the D of E.

Intresting to see that now we have the new look Scout website it now mentions the PADI stuff, where as before it only used to mention BSAC as the National Governing Body.

I think that is because PADI's age ranges more closely matched those of the Scouts!

PADI opens it's doors at (10) roughly the same age as the troop does (10.5) - whereas BSAC now opens it's doors half way through troop life (12) (so half of the Scouts in the troop get excluded) - and BSAC used to open it's door only at Explorer Scout time (14) until recently.

PADI were very quick to approach the Scout Association and exploit that difference...and will continue to do so as long as we continue to exclude half the troop!:o

However - hats off to Alistair and his team...we still get all the mentions for snorkelling for Cubs and Scouts:)

I did a similar thing at my wife's then nursery school a couple of years ago, in full gear. It was a hoot. Children inflating my suit and jacket, breathing off regs, mask wearing. I think we had a couple of converts.
I found it the most intimidating presentation ever-attention spans are a little short, and that was just the staff!

Acually, I believe Bubblemaker starts at 8 so PADI could have a four year jump on us.

Shame!
That means that PADI can also service the Cub Scout Pack too.

Two sets of Leaders who might decide to give these active kids an introduction to diving through PADI...all whilst BSAC turns then away!

My Cubs will of course be visiting the local BSAC Branch that has a snorkelling section.

Can Kippax BSAC cope?
Well....I'l be taking a CSL who is a AOW Snorkelling Instructor and a GSL who is a SIT - so I hope so!
