Hi All,

I'm feeling a little melancholy tonight. I often do at this time of year. Why? Well tomorrow is the 24th Anniversary of the sinking of HMS Sheffield during the Falklands conflict.

The Shiny Sheff as she was known was hit by an exocet missisle from an argentine aircraft and 19 of her crew were lost. The ship sank whilst under tow a few days later and was the first RN ship lost in almost 40 years. I knew a couple of those lost. I also lost a close friend on HMS Coventry sunk on 25th May.

I know there are loads of ex services guys on this forum and I'm sure many of them would like to join me in raising a little toast to lost comrades.

RIP

Thanks for listening

Alan

Hi Alan

Yes, i remember it well, i was on a course at the School of Infantry at the time and we followed it all very closely (half the course ended up deployed to the South Atlantic).

I have raised a glass to them tonight.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

Glass raised.

To those that have gone before me.

Sheffield my home city.

And, i remember the falklands, was a war that neednt have happened. The argentinians should have tried to sort it out via diplomtic means instead of causing the deaths of so many people.

I'm in the Somme this weekend, working for a project to create an online memorial for every single British War Grave (http://www.britishwargraves.org.uk/).
We're trying to complete all the Somme graves as it's the 90th anniversary on the 1st July this year. Hopefully all the grave pictures will be available online by the day of the 90th anniversary.
We'll be laying a wreath this weekend at one of the cemeteries on the Somme, and I'll be taking a moment to pause and reflect, I'll be thinking of the lads in the Falklands too.

Absent friends

They will never be forgotten, at least I know that I and many, many more like me will never forget.

Here here.

I was preping personnel and kit ready go whilst glued to the TV and radio. I eventually got down there just after the cease fire and have been down the the Falklands several times since.

Believe me, the guys who lost their lives down there are never far from our thoughts.
