I found a shiny bit of dive kit while in Cornwall over Easter weekend - if you lost something and can match the 'what, where and when' I'll reunite you with your kit

Hi Martin,

Could you add where in Cornwall. It might avoid some raised expectations. I daresay a lot was lost around the Scylla and JEL last w/e.

There're no identifying name or marks on the item, so I'm trying not to be too specific as where it was found will go a long way to identifying the rightful owner, but it wasn't JEL/Scylla

I dived in many different locations over the weekend - literally all over Cornwall. Not sure where, but I lost my: VR3, poseidon regs, deco cylinder and holiday tickets to the maldives.

Please message me for my address! ;)

Fingers crossed,
Andy

Andy Well the VR3 is easy - you have entered your name and contact tel number haven't you? :)

Likewise the tickets. The cylinder has come in useful, I ebayed the regs :D :D

Dear Sparticus,
If that piece of kit is my Canon camera in it's waterproof housing and still in tact it will have my pictires on it including a short video clip of a large cuttlefish. I lost it off Porthkerris on a night dive. I was diving with the UWESAC club:eek:

I may have some good news for you.

One of our members found a camera on his dive Thursday at the very same site, shame to spoil his excitement, but I guess it will be replaced with yours.

I'm just waiting for him to get back to me with more details on his find so I can cross reference details, i'll mail you directly with more info.

Regards

I have been contacted by Mr Dixon requesting more details of the camera found including type description etc but no response from him since.
Just in case he didn't get the measage I sent.

It was an A70 Canon in a waterproof canon case, Flourencent yellow lanyard (elastic) with a stainless steel carabina on it. The memory card is a 512mb compactflash, batteries are recharchable 2500mAh pink/purple.
The first picture on it is a picture of Porthoustock carpark.
It has several video clips including some on the Volney, a pipe fish which I pick up and set down.
Lots of pictures of me with various buddys underwater of each dive.
One of the last pictures is of me and someone in a green and black drysuit actually on the dive.

If you know mr Dixon could someone get this measage to him please, as email doesn't seam to work!

Dear Rich,
Still no other contact from Mr Dixon. Is there a Possability he could find one of the lectures at Portsmouth Uni and hand him the camera along with his address so I can post the reward cheque.

The lecturers name is Paul Watson he will be in the faculty of science as he lectures on haematology/transfusion related modules. I haven't contacted Mr Watson yet about my camera but if Mr Dixon mentoned my name if he gave it to Paul (he used to work for the National Blood service in a post I am partialy fullfilling myself now) I can arange for either my boss who lives in Portsmouth to collect from Paul.
The other option would be for him to hand the camera in at the reception at the National Blood Service centre in Southampton and mark it for the attention of Helen Harvey, Scientific & Technical Training Dept.

Please PM me with your address and i'll put my boot up Mr Dixon's to get him moving.

I will be seeing him tonight so if he can't get the camera out I can take it off him and post it out myself on thursday.

fingers crossed we will have it with you by the end of the week.

He needs another kick because it's been over a month since he found my camera and there's still no sign of it being sent!
If he wants me to send a box to put it in and postage, or me to collect it, either way is fine.
I have already missed photo opportunities on two trips I've been on.

Why is he so reluctant to send it?

I wonder if he is aware that this could be 'Theft by finding'? I wonder if that applies for items found in the water?

Best of luck,

Adrian

From memory:eek: anything man made found in the water is classified as "wreck" (whether flotsam, jetsam or lagan) and remains the property of the original owner.

As such any such finds should be reported to the Receiver of Wreck, Sophie Exelby, whose job it is to try and locate the orginal owner and establish if they want their property back or transfer ownership accordingly (probably an oversimplification but you get the jist?:)

Failure to report a find is a CRIMINAL offence and if convicted carries a custodial sentence, substantial fine or both:eek:

Should Tim require it the telephone number for the Receiver of Wreck is 02380 329474

Suppose the best thing to do is not to lose a camera in the first place? I guess the people concerned did not need to post on these forums to reunite it if they had no intention of giving it back.

I am sure it will be passed on. I will give him a kick start as he is in my club. To be honest i never realised it had not been returned.

I will also kick him again as I did forward your address, He still claims not to have received any e-mails from you Tim, but he has been having loads of problems with his AOL account, but I guess that's no conciliation for you.

I also think it's a bit unfair to be suggesting he is reported for theft... After all we didn't have to come forward with the find, it could have been so easy to make a visit to e-bay.

I hope the camera is with you soon.

To be fair to MarineBoyTim...it was not he who suggested anything about "theft by finding".

That was Mr Kelland....and more information given by Mr Watson

Tim was simply lamenting the missed photo opportunities...nothing more!

However ...Mr Kelland and Mr Watson do have a point!
(as does Karim! ...was the yellow elastic cord with the big shiny carabiner in use at the time the camera was lost?)

No you did not have to mention it here. However you are supposed to report anything you find, whether in the sea or on land. You're right, ebay does make it easy to sell good that are not yours.

Finders does not equal keepers.

On the whole I agree with you,

Every find 'Should' be reported, But if the original owner has been found and contact made before the find is reported is it really worth the paper chase to find out what is already known.

Just trying to take the shortest route, having said that I think communication problems have been the cause of the delay rather than any unsavoury ambition to keep the camera.

I have spoken to Mr Dixon this morning and he will be arranging postage as soon as he can.

Problem solved :D

I feel i must set the record straight.

When i found the camera in cornwall i made every effort to speak to people at porthkerris in order to identify the owner of the camera, however although many were aware of a camera being lost none knew who had lost it. I thought it good fortune that shortly after my return from the trip luke informed me that he believed he had identified the owner of the camera through this forum. i then duly emailed on several occasions marineboytim hoping to get details of the camera to prove his ownership and to obtain details for postage. I have yet to receive a reply to my inbox. It is true that i sometimes have problems with my email and it is also true that for the last month that i have had no access to the internet whatsoever due to a technical problem with my computer.

For the delay in our our correspondence and to the return of the camera to its rightful owner I send my apologies to marineboytim and i will endeavour to forward his camera to him at my earliest opportunity. Perhaps if marineboytim has any particular preferences as to how it is packaged he may contact me either direct or via one of my club members if this proves difficult.

Again i apologise for the delay in the return of this item and applaude the constructive use of forums in this beneficial process of reuniting owners with their lost posessions.

Many thanks
'Mr Dixon'

Thanks for that and thanks for putting the record straight. I hope that the item does eventually find its rightful owner and considering all the trouble that people ahve gone through I feel that a small donation to club funds may well be in order!

What a fab site this is.
I'm reunited with my camera and I have posted 3 cheques in thanks to Mr Dixon.
One to him as a reward in finding and part postage coverage costs,
one written to Luke K (I didn't know your last name Luke so fill in the rest) and one to the RNLI to pass on to the relivant parties.

Chase Mr dixon if you havent had the cheque yet from him Luke (Oh no not again I can hear Luke say).

Sorry I cant give everyone involved a reward but you will have to make do with my heartfelt thanks instead.
Muchos Magic many thanks

Tim Thanks for the Cheques, They have all gone to Doug's home address so will pass them over as soon as he get's them in his little fingers.

Just to let you know I will cash the cheque and forward the money to the DDRC, Without them I'd have at least two less Christmas cards to send.

Thank you for the donations and happy photographing.
