Zenobia - November 05

I'm just back from Cyprus where I was on holiday with the family, but it would have been rude not to get a day on the Zenobia, probably the most famous wreck in the Med.

I dived with Dive-In, who have several centres across the island, the one I used was right next to the harbour in Larnaca, so it was a 2 minuit walk and a 3 minuit boat ride to the site, it does not get much easier than that.

As it was a family holiday I only had one day, so it was important I got a good couple of dives and did not end up with a bunch of holiday divers running out of air or not getting off the surface. I had made contact with Dive-In through YD (surprise, surprise), and also met them at the Dive show in Birmingham, they turned out to be a very professional bunch. I would go as far as to say they are one of the most professional I have dived with abroad, where some of the centres are considerably lacking when it comes to the rules of there agency.

I took all my own kit and just got a twinset out there, it fitted first time and had the right mix for the dive, a good start. After a brief and getting to the site we dived as 2 x 2 pairs but stayed close. The vis was a reasonable 20m and the temp was around 21deg - so I took a drysuit as I'm a woose. First dive was around an hour with a depth of 42m and some mild penetration through the bridge and a couple of gangways, but most of it was on the outside to get orientated and see some of the wreck. We clocked up around 20mins of stops which were done on a trapease they have permanantly fixed there, again, easy diving.

Dive two was about the same but with most of the dive on the inside of the wreck, we went through the main truck decks, the canteen, laundry, down a lift shaft of sorts? and through some of the accomodation. This is a big wreck, there is a whole lot more to do on it, but you could spend the week on it and not get board, well, possibly not, but you could certainly not see it all even in that time. The lorries are impressive, many have some sort of cargo you can make out but you need to be thoughtfull of the position of them, some are still held in place by rather rusty chains, so common sence must prevail.

On the whole I had a good couple of dives, I would recommend Dive-In if you go, and make sure you are suitably qualified, but they will take less qualified divers in if you only want to see the outside and can do around 30m.
