View Full Version : Min age for Basic Nitrox
Hi could someone please tell me what the min age for the BSAC basic nitriox diver is.
Thanks
Bizarre or an anomaly then?
PADI EAN min age is 15 as is TDI'a basic nitrox.

What is there in basic nitrox that should place any restriction on who does it?
If we believe it OK for a 12 year old to dive (which is a whole seperate arguement that has been done ad infinitum) then there is absolutely no reason not to let a 12 yo do nitrox, and if you agree with any of the arguements against a 12yo diving then lots of reasons to get them using nitrox.
(I can probably fit your daughter in on the next course if you want :D )

Hi Pete :)
I'm not quite sure where to start with this.
Firstly I think, it just seemed curious to me given the objections of many to lowering the age for dive training within BSAC that this is out of step with the other agencies and I wonder if this had been talked through by the NDC.
Fwiw from my POV I believe the BSAC basic nitrox course is possibly a little simpler than both the PADI and TDI versions so I'm firmly of the opinion allowing youngsters onto it is a good thing. However I can see that some 12 y/os may have difficultly with the theory; although these children would have to have had the focus to be qualified as divers the diving courses themselves are less condensed and debatably more manageable. In short, particularly with the PADI and TDI versions, imho the theory is more hard going being condensed in this way than that of the theory for the diving courses.
Personally I was a big fan of lowering the age generally as you may be aware but (although theory suggests it is a positive factor) I don't think there's any data to study concerning young (12-14 y/os) divers using nitrox.
For my part I'm of the opinion this would be a positive factor regarding safety although some data to look at would be helpful, my daughter is 13 now (almost) and restricted to 21 metres for another 12 months due to her age so I'd like her to be able to use nitrox and I believe she could cope with the theory of the BSAC course. I'd also love her to do it with you/your branch too but presently she isn't BSAC qualified (although she is a member) and my branch does not entertain training of young divers.
As a Junior Rescue Diver she could in theory just cross over with lectures on tables and structure to the grade of Sports Diver I believe and I think as an ADI I could do those lectures. But until a branch entertains her there seems little point and as I understand it she would be unable to attend the BSAC nitrox course until she held a BSAC grade.
As a side issue although the age limit has been lowered there has been little change within my BSAC diving circles.

Tony
Your daughter could do the BSAC Nitrox course, non-members can attend BSAC SDCs, they do I believe have to pay a slightly higher registration fee to HQ. If you a strugling with a branch, contact you regiongal coaching team, they may be able to advise a branch or I'm sure they will be running regional SDCs. If you are near the South East Region, we have several in the calender for this year. See www.bsac-se.org.uk/sdcpoe.asp

She does not need a BSAC qualification to my knowledge, a salt transfer will do and as a direct member she would get it at the normal price.
Give me a ring if you want to chat about it

While not wishing to rain on the parade...Someone that SALTs across to BSAC direct potentially has no prior knowledge of BSAC 88s. The Nitrox Diver course assumes familiarity with them.
AIUI Nitrox Diver is open to Ocean Diver's and above. Strictly speaking a Rescue Dive with a SALT is neither an OD or an SD. They are a PADI Rescue Diver eligible to train as a BSAC Dive Leader.
Just a thought or two.
Thanks fellas.
I'll need to talk it through with her and check out the qualification position, to me Matt's point seems valid but on the other hand if non members are accepted onto SDCs then it's a moot point.
Thanks for the link Graham, I'll keep an eye on that but I think if she does the course at all it would more likely be with Pete's mob, he didn't seem that bad and they're quite local...... plus I'll have to check but he may owe me a pint which I could consume while they're all working ;)

Tony is an ADI and could get her up to the required standard before the course with no problem.
To be honest the offer was made because it was Tony, anyone else and I would not entertain the idea of teaching a 13 year old I did not know on a nitrox course

Depends if you count the fact that as part of the SALT process you are meant to be trained on missing lectures especially tables
