Hi there, I hope a Compressor expert is around. I am the proud owner of one of the above...no probs so far..however.

Can anyone explain what the "reduction gear oil" is for, what is a "reduction gear". I have been reading the manual but its very vague. How do I top it up, is it done via the normal oil filler (for the engine oil).

Also does that also mean that the actual compressor oil (not the engine oil) is filled the same way?

Any advice gratefully received? I have previously had assistance from Phil before but have now lost his email?

Is that technical enough?

Hi Cris,
DON'T PUT ENGINE OIL INTO THE COMPRESSOR!!!!!!
Reduction gearing in the compressor its self would be for the oil pump only but this is usually lubricated via the comp crankcase oil.
If you have a petrol or diesel engine driving the compressor there might be reduction gearing on the output drive shaft, this reduces the shaft speed.
Normally the compressor input / drive shaft carries the connecting rods and pistons without any gearing, the RPM of the compressor being governed by the motor and drive pulley diameters.
There is one oil filler plug on the compressor and usually has a dip stick in the cap or sight window in the crankcase wall.
If the engine has reduction gearing there will be two filler plugs, one for the engine sump and one for the gearbox. The reduction gears will require a heavy grade oil with a high shear strength, not engine grade oil.

Hope this helps,

Phil

Hi Chris
I think Phil must have answered your question , I have the Junior II electric and it only has one oil plug.

If you have any doubt try the guy's at Divex in Aberdeen they are very helpful.
their web address is www.divex.co.uk

Happy filling !!

Thanks Phil

I knew you'd be out there. Hmm, I am definitely confused now.

It sounds like on the Petrol Bauer Junior II compressor, there is only one oil filler plug, rather confusingly however I can see at least two dipsticks on it.
I have mailled bauer and will let anyone know the answer (who wishes to know) BTW I have no probs whatsoever filling wise for the first 10 hours.

Its only when I started really studying the booklet that I got really thrown by the terminology.

How about modifying your signature with a link to where your contact details can be found Phil?
(you could even cut and paste it out of my sig!)

Dr Paul Beal - our communications manager would be delighted to give you a pat on the back for doing that to promote what is undoubtedly the very best Region within the BSAC!

Still no word from Bauer, I will now try our friends in Aberdeen (unfortunately I did not buy it from them for reasons I won't go into) but I'll let you know what they say, they certainly look good on the website.

Wait and see....
