Hello, thought I would introduce myself.

Been a long time lurker slowly reading up on what is what in the diving world. I went for my first try dive last Thursday and loved every minute of it and can't wait for the next session this coming Thursday.

Just wanted to also say thanks to all the people in the forum who give their advice and share their experience so other can gain. I have learnt quite a bit already just from these forums.

Hi and welcome.

How about telling us your real name. ;)

Hi and welcome.

Hi,

As Tony said it is nice to be able to call someone by their real name or nickname if that is how you are better known, but having said that it is not obligatory on these forums.

You will see that the majority of regular posters use their name either as part of their user name or in their signature.

For me it is more friendlier than some non de-script user name.

But welcome to the forums, whatever your name?

regards

Hamish

Hi Stephen.

Welcome indeed.

And what you can do for us is inject us with some of that enthusiasm that you are no doubt feeling at the moment.

Some of us old'uns on here a feeling somewhat under the influence of the long cold winter blues.

But I am doing a sea dive on Tuesday!

Speak fer yerself. ;)

Right now it's a coolish 22C with a water temperature around the same, depending on where the thermocline is. It's also decidedly windy but it's a warm wind. :D

Welcome aboard Stephen. :)

Stephen Batfink eh?
Not entirely fair Mr. Mason.

Stephen has come up with his given name, maybe he'll come up with his surname in due course. Heck I haven't come up with my surname, yet, which happens to be Gerzner. So what?

Before anyone starts to carry on regardless, please note that Richard and I have known each other for a number of years, I feel we're entitled to bait each other and no doubt he does as well (even though I can't, at all, profess to speak for him).

Bloomin 'eck tough crowd in here ;)

I dunno, I feel giving my surname so early would make me no better than a cheap one night stand. Whatever happened to romance and wooing a man for his name? :D

Not cheap, just open and demonstrably not a trolling spammer. :)

Welcome indeed and I trust that you will enjoy as many diving years as I and many others that play here have.

Hold onto your cash yet awhile. When you do decide to buy, take an experienced diver with you.

Amen to that!

There's nothing worse than a novice diver in the grip of a "feeding frenzy". That's pretty well guaranteed to make you want to sell pretty well the lot of it once you get a clue, t'internet is littered with examples of such.

That's great advice and something I have read time and time again, so definately something I will be taking on board. I have decided the best way to channel my excitment is by reading as much as possible about all the different bits of kit. Hopefully by doing so I will be able to get a better idea of all the pros and cons of the multitude of choice. Will undoubtedly be asking someone with more experience to help me out when I do eventually go for it though.

That's what your BSAC club is for. Ask people who have kit you are interested in why they bought it and are they happy with it. At many clubs they'll let you try out the kit in the pool to see if it really does suit you.

Good advice that. Borrow stuff and try it before you part with your cash if you can.

As you live in North Yorkshire. (North Yorkshire is nearly as big as Austrailia so west coast could be nearer but...)

Get your club to take you out to the Longbenton wreck off Hornsea. 19.5 metres deep. Fantasic broken but rear is almost intact. Engine on its side and easy to see. Really good for Ocean Divers. Clear in Summer with lots of fish life.

Thanks for the suggestion Gary, have just had a quick read and even found a bit of a video on youtube of Longbenton.

Have to say wreck diving is what is really appealing to me about diving.
