Hi,

can anyone help me with regard to undersuits.

I am in motion of buying Otter Drysuit and was going to buy the Artic 200g Commercial one but friends have told me to buy the Artic 100g as the 200g is too hot.

Any ideas? Thanks Ro.

Why don't you buy a O3 point base.
Thanks

had a 300g supplied with mine and that was definately an overkill; the 200g is fine year round but now i have a Weezle

Reckon you should stick with the 200g meself

Dear Ro,

I use a 200g otter undersuit (under an otter britanic) in the summer in Dublin with just trunks underneath it. In the winter under the ice (in the alps) I add one of two layers of heavy ski underwear under the same undersuit and manage fine. I am fairly skinny. I would definetly go for the 200g again unless I was using a compressed neoprene suit with it.

regards
Iain

The only person who knows which undersuit to choose is you
Everybody is different
Friends of mine use undersuits that I know I would freeze in
I feel the cold and need a thick undersuite
I personally use Xerotherm Artic on top of a O three PBB in the winter and in the summer I use the PBB

I would rather be to warm than cold :D

xerotherm arctic 3 piece undersuit for me. Definitely the best, and least restrictive I've had.

I've got the Artic and I'm off to Stoney in about half an hour. I don't expect to be cold. I will have a set of thermals on under it

During the summer it can get a bit warm whilst kitting up but is fine in the water, just put less air in the suit. I only wear trunks underneath.

A lot of it depends on what you do, a lot of my diving involves long hangs so a bit more thermal protection is good and as I don't have it on for long on the surface it is not a problem. But if I was going out on RIBs and therefore had to keep the suit on for long periods it would be too hot.

The only time I've been too hot was in the swimming pool testing the repair after an incident with mice.

I prefer them to the quilted type undersuit.

For protection against cold etc I use, a high wicking base-layer top, then a 100g mid-layer quilted thermal suit and finally my 2mm CNX dry-suit.

The base-layer top can be bought from shops such as Millets or Field and Trek. This keeps my torso dry and thereby, free of chill.

I dive in UK waters all year round and find the above suitable for my use.

How do you get the mice into the drysuit on a rolling rib though?

I bet they tickle............... :D

Not cold at all apart from my hands - but noticed that my Artic is a 300 gramme - definitely not too hot though even in summer

If I were you I'd go with the 200g. I have the 100g and need other layers underneath when diving recently. I'm sure the 100g will be fine when the water warms up some, but something more substantial is better for the winter.

I only have a 100g undersuit. Use it all year round with variable numbers of layers underneath. January in Capenwray tends to warrant lots underneath it, but Im not cold in it. Think I would want to try a 200g if i bought another, but no problems with 100g.

Which Otter drysuit?

Personally, I am a big fan of the Xerotherm Artic set. As comfortable and agile as wearing a tracksuit, but as toastie as I've ever needed in the UK (under membrane). I have added a Weezle waistcoat for extra torso insulation when conducting long, cold, static dives, but those are a rarity.
