I have been in the royal navy for a year, i am stuck shore side for the next 2 years under training, based down in Fareham (portsmouth). Does anyone on here know how i can get on a beginners diving course like a bsac of a padi? Any replies would be much appreciated.
Cheers

dont the services have special branches? They do, but I don't think you have to be in one, even if there is one nearby.

I think there can be an issue in that all services diving has to be marshalled by a SADS? I'm not sure where a services member stands re diving without a SADS - are they allways on duty type of thing? Thankfully there are serveral SADS here, so hopefully will correct me.

yeah we have a diving branch, but u have to be mega fit to be a navy diver, i would rather be doing it for fun rather than as a job for the navy, already doing enough as it is :)

Dear Frosty,

Read the attachment it contains all you need to know about sport diving within the mob, then, try this link they may prove helpful...

http://www.gib-uk1216.org.uk/

Apply for a course at JSSADC at Bovisand and let our wonderful tax payers pick up the tab! Then join HM Gov diving tours its magic. Your clerks office or whatever the dark blue jobs call it (writers) should be able to help or your PT staff.

Its a whole new world down there.

Just do it!

Hi Adrian

You only need to have SADS if you are diving within the Service club and are on duty. If Service time or any equipment purchased by the Service is being used then that dive would need a SADS. BUT divers from a Service club could all go on a dive at the weekend , use only their own equipment and not need a SADS as they are not on duty.

So if Frosty was on leave or at a weekend and went to a local dive centre he could learn to dive and/ or dive wih them without the need for SADS, as once again he is not on duty.

Frosty

The Services have sports diving clubs, which are nothing to do with the RN diving branch. They are 'Special' Branches of the BSAC (though why they are Special I don't know!!). There is at least one in Pompey, and your PT staff should be able to put you in touch with someone from the club. I have PMd you with more info

Dear Adrian,

Please read attachment. All you need to know in black and white. They may satisfy the curious. Of particular interest is the medical requirements especially the amendment inserted by the RAF Sub-Aqua association with regard to civilian SADS diving within service branchs(this may apply to some BSAC Regional Coaches who give their time so willingly to the services) If not further details are available from the individual service sub-aqua associations who have there own web sites and are available for public access. Which also explains in some detail as to what some of the taxpayers money is spent on in developing the leadership skills and team working abilities that are so vital in armed forces who are the envy of world.

Keep on Divin'

Alan:)

Dear Steve,

Please look at the BSAC definition of Special Branch. Service Sub-Aqua clubs ARE special, because it is IMHO special to be a BSAC member within one. My wish is that i lived local enough to be still in one.

Alan,

Just for info, and not points scoring, the JS regs were re issued in Mar 05 so the link is to the old regs. They are inessence the same for the majority of chapters with updates to include mixed gas and RB stuff. Unfortunately I do not have an electronic copy to post. I am sure they will be available on line once Bovi get their new website up and running.

JS regs can be seen on your very own RAFSAA website

Para 40-57?

Unfortunately I do not have an electronic copy to post.

May i suggest you ask RAFSAA webmaster to sort it, bluejobs are good at that sort of thing

I am sure they will be available on line once Bovi get their new website up and running.

Give em hand they are only matlots, can't expect them to read and write as well as defend our waters and look after Cormorants
