View Full Version : Scrolling sideways on large threads

OK chaps, so this was a problem on the old forums where the threads got so long that the tree view went off the edge of the screen so we had to scroll sideways. A right pain it was too.
It's happening again with the really long thread:
Child protection screening. How important do you think it is? (http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=3749)
I'm on hybrid view and the box near the top that shows the tree view is getting wider, and out of line at the left hand side of the screen.
Can this be stopped from happening, I have a 17" screen and I'm starting to have to scroll sideways just to find the new posts.
I'd appreciate it if someone could find a solution to this one.
Cheers,
Andy.

Andy,
There is no full solution, only compromise. In the end yiu might need an infinite screen. I can either;
1) Reduce the length of title, but this could still eventually go off the screen. Seeing most people don't change the title, this is usually "Re: blah blah etc" anyway.
and/or
2) Change the depth of tree, this the displays a message if there are more levels.

Hi .
Click on display mode on the right hand side of the task bar and choose linear.
the replies will be in order of date of posting.

Hi Ray,
Some people like to read threads in the order of quoting, which the tree view allows. I think that is what Andy would like to be able to continue to do.
Never liked it myself. :)

Ah right, I see. Thanks for that.
OK, how about the title length being limited to a max number of letters? (Is that possible?) And maybe an explanatory box for further description of the thread title? I've seen this elsewhere and it seems to work OK. Might be worth a try.
I can't afford an bigger screen.... :)

I found a neat little option deep down in the settings, I've set the Threaded Mode Title display to 40 characters, it was unlimited. Have a look now and see if that's any better.

Excellent. It has cropped all the thread titles to:
Child protection screening. How...
instead of the full title, and also pushed it closer to the left side of the box, there's loads of space on the right hand side now. Plenty of room for a lonnnng discussion.
Marvellous stuff.
Cheers Keith. All smiles here :D
