An undersea volcano erupting just south of Spain's Canary Islands may be the beginnings of a new island, or an extension to an existing one. For some, it's a colourful spectacle - for others a major blow to their livelihood.

I had a look at the video Eddie. :)
I've never dived there but I did snorkel there a fair bit back in the late fifties and I can only confirm your own thoughts: no fish life, today, worth speaking of. The topography is pretty familiar though, I guess the "fish killers" didn't really worry about that side of things - thankfully.
