View Full Version : Diving in Manchester!
Hello there,
I have just moved to Manchester and I'm looking to join a BSAC club. I am qualified to Ocean Diver level, but haven't dived since September 2005.
I work near Rochdale, and live in Manchester city centre so any club that is situated near either of these two points would be of interest.
Also, does anyone know of any decent dive sites in the manchester area (Quarries, etc.). I use to live in the midlands and Stoney Cove was my local dive place. Stoney Cove was great for brushing up on diving skills and getting some practice in. Is there anywhere near manchester that offers similar opportunities?
Many thanks
Adam
Hi Adam
I am sure there will be someone here soon to recommend a club but the nearest inland site is Capernwray just up the M6 so you can try there, it seems to be quite popular :D
Adam, there's an inland site a whole lot closer than Capernwray - Delph over near Northern Diver just a mile or two off the M6. It is very similar to Stoneycove in the midlands in that it has lots of sunken "things" for you to swim around like a Jet Provost aeroplane, a Scorpion light tank and an old armoured personel carrier. Membership is required at around £7 for two years and you then pay a day fee to dive. It is open 6 days a week but closed on Mondays.
Bury SAC, my old club before I moved to Darwen, is also an option for you as a decent BSAC club in your area. They meet on Monday evenings at the Castle Leisure Centre and use the 4M deep diving pit for training.
Hope this helps...
Best wishes,

Hi Adam
Welcome to the furum.
I would give the Delph a miss just now, they are draining it for improvements over the winter and it is not good at present. Best look at the web sites for both and then you may have a better idea, but the cape gets my vote at present, it's got better facilities and far better vis, but is about 50% more expencive - you pay for what you get.

If you want a really fantastic dive site in Manchester then I recommend Denton Lake. Did my PRM their many years ago.

Salford or Crumpsall clubs are probably your nearest given your location. They are advertised on the BSAC clubs by region page. I think there is another in Old Trafford also just down the road along with several other clubs in the area. I’m not a member of any of them (currently), though I have met quite a few of them through the dive shop I work at in Stockport.
If you just wanted to try & get some in water time in the local pool there is also a dive school that runs classes in The Manchester Aquatics Centre on a Friday evening though I’m not sure if they are BSAC. The centre does have a number for them if you talk to the right person.
Wouldn't think you will go far wrong whichever club you approach, as they are all nice enough people.
