It's a services qualification, you need a SADS to run diving operations if diving with the RN, Army or the RAF. Even amateur diving operations.
JSSADC (Joint Services Sub Aqua Diving Club) is the organisation that is an 'umbrella' of all diving clubs within the armed forces.
Many thanks for that , just curious .:)
The qualification of SADS (Sub Aqua Diving Supervisor) is unique to service diving. Despite being a sport, most diving within this environment is undertaken on duty and as such comes under the ACOP for diving at work The MOD superintendant of diving issues Joint Service regs through the JS diving center at Bovisand, these are in addition to and complement BSAC guidelines. The SADS is responsible for implementing all of the regs and safe practices, to be the DO of a service club, you should be a SADS.
The main point is that all sport diving is controlled by a SADS. To become one you have to be an Adv Diver for over a year, hold a DCxn ticket and VHF SRC cert as the entry standard, a pre SADS course is also a vital precursor to the test week. The assessment is run over a week with theory exams on diving and boating subjects and JS regs. then it is a week of planning, briefing and supervising dives, the majority of which culminate in various emergency scenarios that require you to find recover, or whatever, divers, admin O2, first aid and use the radio etc etc. It is DPM/PRM/FA/O2/DCxn +++, the planning, kitting, briefing and control are all assessed, as is your boat handling, first aid etc when you are a worker. You are also assessed on your personal diving skills before you become a casualty at the end of the dive!
It is an excellent assessment, well run and it is a real test of your personal skills, control and ability to manage or mitigate problems where possible. It would be a fantastic qual for all clubs but would be almost impossible to run, administer and maintain. The services struggle to maintain an active pool of SADS who are current and able to run expeditions.
The base line for a pass is the assessors confidence that you can walk away from Bovi ready to plan, lead and safely supervise, or in worse case manage incidents, anywhere in the world with minimal resources.
Hope that answers the question
Many thanks for the explanation , ( SADS ) are definatley put through a tough sounding course to gain that qualification .

Hi Fellas
JS SADS website is growing slowly but surely. Please remember to add your SADS number and which service you were/are in when applying.

Good luck in your search for SADS/Instructor!
