Hello everyone:

Mr. frogoutofwater and I recently relocated to Paris (from Canada), and I have been using some of BSAC's online resources to research our upcoming dive holidays (Oman in March, Canaries in May, then ?)

As our French is still at the level where we get ourselves into trouble (or at least make fools of ourselves), and we have an affinity for British wit (we both used to live in London), I thought I should sign up for this forum.

We're both novice divers. Mr. frogoutofwater learned how to dive in the Red Sea about 10 years ago when he was posted there as a member of the Air Force. I learned how to dive in New Zealand a few years ago. We're both keen to make the most of our posting in Europe (including the generous vacation allowance), spend the frequent flyer miles I racked up in the my old job, explore near (and not-so-near) dives sites and improve our skills (maybe get our AOW later this year, once I have more than 30 dives under my belt).

Au revoir for now.

L'eau pour des grenouilles peut être trouvée dans la seine.

Nous ferions de la plongée subaquatique si M Chirac et son ministre de l'écologie faisaient la plongée dans la Seine à côté de Notre Dame.

Google gives:

We would make subaqueous diving if Mr. Chirac and his Minister for ecology made the diving in the Seine beside Our Lady.

I think reflecting the fact that Seine is a fairly niffy canal rather than a pristine river. Still nice to walk along though...

Chris Cherrington advised me that frogs swim in the Seine (I suppose he thought there was no reason for me to be a frog out of water in Paris).

I said we (Mr. frogoutofwater and I) would scuba dive in the Seine if Mr. Chirac and his Minister for the Environment were seen swimming in front of Notre Dame cathedral.

Mmmm... since Chirac is likely to be attacked by the bargées I think you might have a long wait..

There is some reasonable wreck diving on the D Day wrecks in Normandy. Its a fairly easy drive from Paris. If you decide to cross the Manche (check http://www.speedferries.com/ for very good deals) there is reasonable diving on the UK south coast in the summer, althought he weather can mess it up in winter. Vis is not always good either.

You will find the PADI qualifications are not really recognised in France and CMAS is the way things are done. (BSAC has CMAS equivalence :D)

Enjoy your stay

Chris
