As part of the work on the BSAC WIKI Diving Encyclopaedia, we're adding details of dive shops who supply various diving gases here:

http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=England

We're currently working on the list for England but there are other pages linked in for other regions and overseas too.

We'd like to invite people to add details of their local dive shops to the lists.
(If you're struggling, don't worry about adding links to web pages, we can do that for you) We really do need help with the information gathering if anyone would like to contribute.
And we have details on some that need a bit of updating if anyone has been recently to any of the dive shops.

Cheers.

In the list copied from Dive Instruct, can you to delete

Aqualeisure (Swindon) 3 Commercial Road, Swindon, Wiltshire Nitrox - not available on site, cylinders are sent to the Melksham store, 2/3 day turnaround. 01793 522210

Reading Dive 17 The Parade, Silverdale Rd Earley, Reading. RG6 7NZ All 'other gas' cylinders are sent to the Runnymede shop for filling with a 2-3 day turnaround (Clean air is available in-house) Tel: 0118 926 4814 Fax: 0118 926 3213

These two shops have closed down. Which is a shame, as I used both of them - a lot!

Annie,

You can make the changes yourself, all you have do do is create a login and you can change and add what you like.

Go on, give it a go.

Thanks Annie, done that.
Did you know that you can alter these pages yourself?
All you have to do is register, log in and go to the page you want to alter, then click on 'edit' at the top, and make whatever changes you like, there is even a facility for you preview it before saving and to change it back if you make a mistake. It's really easy to use.
In fact, if you can make a posting on this forum, you already have the knowledge to contribute to the BSAC Wiki Diving Encyclopaedia. :)

Yeah, but she can still change it and then re-change it if she'd like to play around with it. :D
A bit like moving the furniture around at home. :)

Err, no.

Very technically challenged  Me and computers don't get on too well together.

And I don't move the furniture around, either. I'd only trip over it!

Annie,

If you can post here, you can post there. If you make any mistakes, or destroy anything, we can go back to the previous version - nothing is lost.

Just try it...

Reading Dive

can't say I'm sorry to see the back of these guys - I took some cylinders there to be filled, and they came back so hot I could barely touch them.

Needless to say, that was the last lot of business they saw from me.

You don't need anyone to set it up for you - you can do it yourself.

Here's the easiest way to start a new page :-

- Decide where you want the page to appear in the overall scheme of things.
- Put in a link to your new page at that point. You do that by putting in the name of the new page, surrounded by [[ and ]]. Try to get your spelling / capitalisation as you really want it - we can change things, but it leaves less detritus hanging around if we don't have to.
- Preview your edit to make sure you're happy with it. The new page name should show in red. Save it when you're happy.
- Clicking the new link you've just made will take you straight to an edit screen. Off you go!

As Vic has said, you can start any page yourself just by writing the page title enclosed by double squared brackets: [[ Boats]] and when this is saved it appears as a page link to a whole new page that you can then edit. It really is that easy.
As for linking it in to the contents page, don't worry about that, all you have to do is writing the name of the contents page like this: [[Contents]] and it will have created a link back to the main contents page.
It's frighteningly easy to do.
The hard bit is thinking what to put on the page. :D

Fool?
You want an example of a Fool?
On the Air and Gas suppliers pages I had Scotland down as being in Wales.
:D
Now I've dived all over Scotland, and I used to live in Wales! You'd have thought I might know the difference by now.:)

Help. I can edit no worries about that. Just can't set up an entry for Greater Manchester. A request to the Geeks. I'd be most grateful if you could put up an entry for Greater Manchester please. The company name is DiveLife. I can suppy the rest of the gubbins. Thank you.

Roz,

Greater Manchester created at County level, not sure if it is treated as a county, like London...

We can run with it for now.

Thank you for doing that. I think you are right that Greater Manchester gets treated like London. Please can you sort out DiveLife so it's name is displayed the same as the others. Many thanks.

Any one else, there are probably still plenty of gaps in the Gas suppliers page

Someone has put Nauti-Tec on Pean Hill down as an air supplier in Canterbury. It shut down in about 2001 or 2002, don't really want to edit someone else's work without an explanation.

OK - why don't you chop it out, then?

This is what a Wiki is all about - the collective knowledge of all its users. If something's wrong - any one of us can put it right. You don't need to ask permission, you don't need to submit changes to a central authority - you just do what's right. If you're mistaken about anything - someone will come along and put it right. If you make a mess because you don't understand Wiki markup - do what you can, someone else will come along and clean things up later.

don't really want to edit someone else's work without an explanation.

Well, you're perfectly entitled to, if you want to. However, good Wiki practice is to fill in the "Summary" box underneath the edit window with a brief description of what you're doing and why (e.g "This shop closed down yonks ago"). This makes life easier when it comes to reading through the history page :-)

That's probably just one of those that I copied over from the Dive Instruct pages to get us started, we've chopped out a few that have closed down, so it's no problem if you know of any that need removing.
Just do as Vic suggests and edit them out, and place a note in the summary box to say why you've removed it. You'll get no complaints from me! :)
I knew that the Dive Instruct list might be out of date when I copied it. The Wiki list is already far better than the Dive Instruct page was.

OK i have changed the Air Naut-Tec bit, should i delete it completely? i think the way i have done it lets anyone who knew of it know its shut.

I have started the boats off, however if i go in from my favorites its not updated, i have to go in from Adrian's link. I have cleared my cache as well. Is this gonna be a problem?

Maybe this thread should become FAQ's :)

Life was a bit easier once i sussed out the 2nd level button :)

OK just gone in from the link in Adrians signature - Its not updated, refresh did zilch.

Went back to Adrians post with a link at the bottom of page 2 and its all there with the 3 boats i put in :- http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Charter_boats_in_the_UK

So once you save the link it don't seem to update :(

Well, I would have done. But that doesn't mean that my way is right and your is wrong. If you like it how it is - that's fine. If someone else doesn't like it - they'll change it.

i think the way i have done it lets anyone who knew of it know its shut.

Makes perfect sense to me. Perhaps this is the way we should all be doing it.

Ah - the problem is that someone moved the page :-)

There was a slight typo in the original page name, so it was moved to where it ought to have been. This operation normally leaves something called a "redirection page", which transfers anyone visiting the old page to the new one - automagically. But because there were no links to the old page, I deleted this redirection page - trying to keep things uncomplicated. So when you've gone back in through your "favourites" link, you went to a page that no longer existed, and you've been re-creating it from scratch...

All this will get sorted out over the next day or so (I'd do it now, but I have other business today).

Don't worry about this - it's a temporary situation, becuase we're currently running 2 pages with almost the same title.

I'll sort it out later (unless someone beats me to it!)

Not quite - if you look carefully at the links, they're slightly different - one has a capital "B" in "Boats", the other doesn't. This actually makes two different pages...

Later on, there will be one page, with the other URL redirecting to it.

A couple of minutes later, it's fixed :-)
