Some maritime archaeology students at Flinders University have prepared a standard letter addressed to the Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP (simply known as JULIA in Australia), requesting that the Australian Government ratify the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

There is more detail on the following Facebook page including a link to the standard letter -https://www.facebook.com/pages/Take-the-PlungeProtect-Australias-Heritage/106503246113620.

For your information, ratifying the convention would allow for the protection of WW 1 & WW 2 naval battle sites in which Australian forces participated and the associated wreck sites as well as sunken aircraft wreck sites. The standard letter does include examples of these sites.

If any of you do send a letter to Julia, it would be appreciated if you could make a post on the above Facebook site.
