ha, can't claim such pedigree, one of the gang did join up and ended up CPO on the Ark and saw the world - my mistake, I went into banking!
we were all water babies, and self taught ourselves snorkelling and spear fishing, all over south devon, cycling to locations with our gear in our rucksacks. Brixham was our home town, so the Breakwater Beach, Shoalstone, Freshwater, Churtson Quay, Fishcombe and Elbury were regular locations
avid diving mag readers ( Skin Diver prefered ), we knew the physics of diving inside out, and at 10m in Torbay could experience and understand the effects
when our buddy in the RN got a scuba set we each had a go, off of the Breakwater beach - indestructible youth eh!
I propose to use my 3mm Oneill long and shortie surfing wet suits, and my old booties (for walking over the rocks/pebbles) and open back fins, and am trying to find a 3mm vest with hood attached, the surfing suits not being ideal and having no real collar to keep the neck and nerves warm

I have recently started snorkelling again after a gap of 35 years. I was self-taught too, started snorkelling at 10, learnt to swim when I was 12.
Had my 1st snorkel session of the year today, 2.5 hours in the water but no fish, so filled up the kayak with spiders on the way in. I am now totally knackered and have a load of boiling to do before bed.

despite my love of shell fish, I've never caught n cooked a spider crab, always passed them by looking for a brown crab, but no doubt I have eaten lots!
You always remember your first brown crab / lobster / mullet / flattie don't you !
I remember being freaked out first time I came face to face with a cuttlefish in the sea grass!!
and picking out scallops, and frying them on the beach - yum!

Spiders take a bit more work to pick, but the meat is sweeter and much tastier.
