View Full Version : Election results BSAC ones that is..
As we are approaching BSAC election time, can anyone shed light on the results of last years ie...numbers of votes cast, who got what votes etc. Perhaps it was published etc. But I dont think I get anything. Maybe it would help jog a few people to vote this time around if it could be given higher profile in the DIVE magazine/and or the website.
Any answers....

From Keith Lawrence's earlier forum response (see link), it would appear that the number of voters is somewhere between 1000 - 2000 members out of a total of 40 000 +. I've never noticed any voting figures either. Maybe Keith or someone could illuminate us?
I think the voting could do with being given a higher profile as well.

Perhaps we should have a controversial vote every year, if it improved membership participation then I?m all for that ;-)

For some reason I can?t find anything on the web site that gives the results of previous motions! The figures are always published in the AGM Minutes IIRC but you get that as a hard copy when you go to the AGM. You?re in the right ballpark saying 1,000 to 2,000, IIRC there were around 1,800 votes cast last time the 12yo issue was voted upon. I don?t think we publish actual figures for elections, we just state ?Elected? when there are enough candidates for a vote. In the ballot for Council positions last year I can tell you that only 1,228 valid votes were cast in total.
I don?t think I?ve been voted for since around 1999! I don?t think there were enough candidates to actually have a vote in 2002, we?re damn close to that situation again this year for ordinary Council members ? Mike T will be advising us shortly exactly what the position is and whether there will be a vote or not.
Am I defending this? No. Do I think that this is a good situation? No. BUT IT?S ALL WE HAVE TO GO ON! We can?t force people to stand for Council, we can?t force people to take an interest, we can?t force people to vote. Personally I wish more people would stand and that more people would vote ? maybe if I upset enough people on here somebody will challenge me and I?ll finally manage to get myself voted off of Council :-)

Maybe a letter to each branch committee pointing out the situation and asking them to for more involvement? At least a few more people might be encouraged to vote, even if no more can be persuaded to stand for your Council position! ;)
Having now belatedly learnt that the voting figures are so appallingly low, I will, as a Branch Chairman, do what little I can to get more of our members to vote.

Interesting Keith, nominations for council closed 18 days ago and the general membership still don't know who's standing for what. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to post the names on the web would it?
Cheers.......Allan

You've been through this process to know the Hon Sec has to check that each nominee is a valid BSAC Member.

They will be in good time Allan. As you know it can be a fraught process, the HS has to go through a formal validation process on a specified date, people do change their minds. Here I am going to defer to the HS and not interfere. I will state publicly that I have submitted a nomination, I leave it to others whether they wish to do the same.

Edward,
You state the obvious, but does it really take 18 days? Are you standing?

Hello Keith,
Do you think it would be a good idea to have details of all the election candidates on the BSAC web site?
ISTR you suggested this a couple of years ago, did anything come of it?
I couldn't find anything with a site search.
